A Quality Manager, or Quality Assurance Manager, is in charge of supervising the production process to make sure that all products meet consistent standards in a ISO controlled environment. Their duties include developing and implementing quality control tests, inspecting products at various stages and writing reports documenting production issues. Especially in a Contract manufacturing CNC machine environment
Quality Manager duties and responsibilities
The Quality Manager has several duties and responsibilities. Some of these include:
Implementing methods to inspect, test and evaluate products and production equipment
Ensuring that products adhere to quality standards
Preparing reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing data
Working according to deadlines for the delivery of products
Training and managing production line staff in production practices and quality assessment of goods
Tracking products through the manufacturing process to guarantee that each part of the process is correct
Performing detailed and recorded inspections of final products so the products are up to industry and company standards
Eliminating products that are not up to standards and finding the reasons for product problems
Understand and experience in using Measurement tools, manual and automated (CMM, Vision, Scan)
Ability to program Non manual measurement tools (CMM) a plus
What does a Quality Manager do?
Quality Managers work at manufacturing plants to make sure that the products being sent out meet consumer expectations. It’s their responsibility to train their staff to recognize defects and imperfections at all stages of the manufacturing and packaging process to uphold consistent quality standards. Quality Managers communicate expectations to staff and observe production processes to identify the causes of common types of mistakes or defects. They research ways to limiting human error on the production line, track the impact of different policies on defective parts. Quality Managers determine how much waste results from errors on the production line.
Quality Manager skills and qualifications
Quality Managers should have a variety of practical skills for their position. The main skills and qualifications of a Quality Manager are:
Familiarity with quality standards and processes to follow federal, state and local regulations and ISO 9001 and AS 9200 certs
Communication skills to convey information in reports, meetings and status reports
Knowledge of the product to perform accurate quality control
Attention to detail
Analysis, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to review systems, find flaws and pose solutions to those flaws
Interpersonal skills
Ability to handle stress
Ability to operate under deadlines while still meeting standards
Quality Manager education and training requirements
The minimum educational requirement for Quality Managers is a bachelor’s degree, whereas a master’s degree is essential to future job growth. Bachelor’s degrees need to focus on natural sciences, business management, industrial science or statistics. Quality planning, verification methods and quality monitoring are the focal points of these degrees. Master’s degrees provide more in-depth research, such as measurement and testing methods, process management, operations management and information systems. Professional certification is available with the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) exam from the American Society for Quality (ASQ).
Quality Manager experience requirements
In addition to a college education or 8+ years of experience, Quality Managers need professional experience in production and/or manufacturing, especially working with CNC machining . Supervision experience is useful for Quality Managers who want to advance in their careers.
