Who we are and what we do:
The TDOC Human Resources & Staff Development Divisions are responsible for the oversight of all human capital management functions for over 6,000 employees located across the state. These areas include, but are not limited to, employee relations and engagement, compensation, occupational health and safety, professional development programs, employee wellness, worker¿s compensation, training, and the Tennessee Correction Academy.

Job overview:
The Director of Employee Safety is a member of the TDOC Human Resources executive management team. This individual thrives in a fast-paced, multi-level organization, driving safety initiatives and a culture of safe work activities and processes across our multiple locations statewide. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in employee safety programs, such as worker¿s compensation, temporary/transitional/modified duties, drug testing, and accommodations. The candidate should also have a proven track record of implementing effective safety initiatives to a large population over various geographic locations in a consistent, legally-defensible way.
Key responsibilities:

Collaborate with senior leaders to align departmental strategies and specific objectives with the overall goals of the organization.

Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Work with Human Resources to report work related injuries to third party administrator as required.

Work with operational divisions and human resources field staff to develop return to work programs and job duties for returning employees with restrictions.

Coordinate, facilitate, and provide technical guidance to supervisors and employees regarding all employee safety programs, such as drug testing and worker¿s compensation.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate health and safety considerations into operational processes.

Serve as the primary liaison with federal, state, and local agencies having jurisdiction.

Develop a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents with third party administrator to identify trends and solutions to common issues and incidents, and generate required reporting.

Prioritize tasks, manage multiple large projects simultaneously, and work independently at central office and statewide in the field.

Provide training to supervisors and employees regarding all employee safety programs, such as drug testing, worker¿s compensation, return to work, and any other related topics.

Collaborating throughout the business to identify and justify opportunities, launching project teams, coaching to drive sustainable results, reporting project status and results, and developing team members.

Manage assigned budgets and resources to ensure accurate monitoring, tracking, analysis, and forecasting conducted to ensure successful performance.
Required experience:
Experience in managing employee health & safety policies, programs, and procedures in a law enforcement or correctional setting may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis up to four years. There is no substitution for the required supervisory experience.
Minimum qualifications:
Education equivalent to a Bachelor¿s Degree in health and safety, I/O psychology, human resources, or other related field as determined by the appointing authority, and eight (8) years of increasingly responsible work in areas of employee safety, at least four (4) years must be in a supervisory capacity.
