Position Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated Part-Time Patent Agent or Patent Attorney to support OTL’s management of inventions in the life sciences domain. For this position, we seek someone who will play a crucial role in evaluating new inventions, formulating patent strategy, and oversight of outside counsel in support of OTL’s efforts to secure intellectual property rights for novel technologies.
Note: In this position, you will be working as a patent advisor and will not be representing the institution. However, to avoid conflicts, we are only accepting applicants that are not active patent representatives for any third parties, i.e., in this position you may not concurrently represent third party clients.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate invention disclosures and conduct patentability assessments.
- Collaborate with licensing managers, inventors, outside patent counsel, and external partners to develop patent strategy for new inventions.
- Work closely with external IP attorneys to direct patent prosecution and review work product such as draft patent applications and responses to Office Actions.
- Conduct prior art searches, review International Search Reports and office actions, and analyze patent landscapes.
- Assist in patent portfolio management and maintenance.
- Assist in managing IP costs and budgets.
- Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and industry trends, and provide guidance and education for the Stanford community regarding intellectual property matters.
- Other projects or duties as may be requested or required.
Qualifications:
- PhD or master’s in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, or pharmacology. You must be able to analyze a wide range of innovative biological research developments and discuss this research at a high level with world-class academic researchers.
- Two or more years of experience as a patent agent or patent attorney and strong academic credentials are preferred.
- Patent agent or patent attorney registration with the USPTO required.
- Strong understanding of patent law and the patent prosecution process.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to quickly communicate complex issues clearly.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Prior experience in technology transfer or intellectual property management is a plus.
