The Washington County Sheriff's Office is currently taking applications to fill two (2) immediate open positions of Deputy Sheriff. An additional Deputy position will be hired after January 1, 2025. The applicants who qualify will be added to the current list of candidates maintained by the Washington County Civil Service Commission. Applications should be turned in immediately to be considered in the first phase of the hiring process to fill the current open positions.
The Sheriff's Office will conduct a Deputy Sheriff Civil Service Entry Level Exam as needed when qualified applicants are available. Dates and time will be posted 30 days prior to testing and applicants will be notified. Those dates are listed in this document.

Starting wages will be as follows:
July 1, 2024 - $60,798.40 to $79,955.20 annually, depending on experience.
January 1, 2025 - $62,319.80 to $81,952.00 annually, depending on experience.
IPERS Protection Occupation Class applicants can take advantage of the recently passed IPERS Bill which will go into effect July 1, 2024 improving the Iowa Sheriff's and Deputies Protection Occupation Class to retire at 80% of your average salary used in benefit with 30 years of service and being 50 years of age or older. You may contact IPERS to check on your status and opportunity.
Washington County does offer opportunities for lateral transfers. Depending on years of experience, Iowa ILEA-certified candidates may begin at up to seven (7) years credit at hire for purposes of pay and vacation. Washington County Sheriff's Office may provide a signing bonus and/or reimbursement of a police reimbursement agreement as the Sheriff deems appropriate. Iowa certified candidates are not required to perform physical agility or written POST testing to be considered.

Additional testing dates, if needed, are as follows: August 8, 2024, September 14, 2024, October 19, 2024, and November 11, 2024. Testing dates may be cancelled if qualified certified lists can be approved by the Washington County Civil Service Commission to fill the three (3) positions.
