Job Description: Assist Captain in all aspects of vessel operations.
Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements that follow are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Some knowledge of the relevant maritime laws, U.S. Coast Guard rules and regulations governing the operation of a passenger vessel.
- The ability to work well under pressure and use good judgment when required to make quick decisions.
- Comfortable and personable in dealing with people. Able to maintain positive relations and work effectively with the company’s committees, board members, president and employees, government officials, government agencies, vendors and the general public. Red Cross certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Qualification as a fork lift operator capable of maneuvering in very restricted spaces.
- Hold a valid State drivers license and demonstrate the ability to easily operate a wide range of vehicles from farm tractors to dump trucks. Must be capable of operating vehicles with standard transmissions.
- Strong and agile enough to lift up to 100 pounds of freight or exit a vehicle through the window.
- Must not be affected by motion sickness and must be stable and athletic enough to maintain balance and work comfortable in rough weather.
- Must have extremely good vision and hearing to act as a lookout when vessel is underway.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the vessel and all of its related mechanical and safety equipment. Obtain certification from “Senior Captain”.
- Detail oriented with strong organization skills.
- MUST BE ABLE TO PASS A DRUG SCREENING.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintenance of the vessels, buildings, docks, vehicles, lift trucks, and all company machinery and equipment.
- Perform emergency repairs as required. Perform preventative maintenance according to manufacturer specifications with minimum disruption of customer service; coordinate with Engineer and Senior Captain.
- Provide input and recommendations on policy, rates, budget, schedules and any other aspect of company operations.
- Report promptly any mechanical problems to Senior Captain and the General Manager. Also, ensure that Senior Captain is kept informed of any changes involving vessel operations.
- Maintain positive relations and work effectively through good communication with Dock Manager and all other Beaver Island Boat Company staff.
- Ensure that commonly accepted maintenance and safety procedures are followed.
- Maintain storage areas/ deck areas in an organized and clean manner.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.(I.E chaining down vehicles and cargo, boat docking procedures, ticket collecting, cleaning, forklift operation ect.)
