Description-
An automotive collision estimate writer inspects vehicles that have been damaged and creates an estimate of the necessary repairs. An estimate writer follows guidelines that determine the extent of damages as well as what should be charged for repair work. Appraises vehicle damage to determine final bill cost of repair for customers or an insurance claim settlement. Works with technicians to handle supplements and collect on receivables from insurance companies. A typical work day for an estimate writer includes inspecting damaged vehicles, consulting and using computerized software for repair costs and creating estimation documents. A collision estimator will consult with repair technicians during the disassembly process to determine the most efficient repair process for the vehicle.
Skills:
Writing estimates is a very detailed and precise process, so employers generally require a person to have training in assessing damage and automotive repair. Training and education options may include degree or certificate programs in collision damage assessment, collision repair estimating or auto collision repair.
Customer service, the estimator works directly with the public and insurance adjusters, and claim representatives. Being able to be a good listener.
Main Duties:
Inspects vehicles to determine the amount of structural, body, mechanical or interior damage using mechanical testing devices, questioning customers about the vehicle or by visual inspection
Calculates cost of labor and parts to fix or replace each affected item and estimate the salvage value of the total vehicle loss
Analyzes repair cost estimates
Consults with the collision repair manager or foreman
Reviews cost effectiveness of repair versus replacement of parts
Determines fees associated with repainting
Fills out insurance claim forms to indicate repair or replacement cost estimates and recommendations
Determines feasibility of repair versus pre-accident market value
Prepares work orders
Keeps customer and insurance provider updated on vehicle repair status throughout the length of the repair
Schedules incoming repair jobs according to shop capacity
Utilizes computer estimating and shop management software (CCC One)
Additional Requirements:
Valid Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record. Ability to adapt to a changing work environment/multi-task; professionalism. Must be able to drive vehicles safely, and responsibly. Good communication skills and a professional appearance are keys to success. NYS Insurance Adjusters License.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
