General Description of Position:
The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading the Engineering Department and Prototype Department, which are responsible for the design, development and release of new boat models, annual introduction of new features, and continuous improvement of product in the field (collectively, “New Product Development,” or “NPD”). Develops NPD capital expenditures, ensures NPD data and metrics are accurately developed, collected, analyzed and reported to drive continuous improvement of processes.
Leadership duties involve managing and evaluating the performance and skills of direct reports, determining goals, training, and identifying and making improvements to include the areas of: engineering processes, innovations, regulatory compliance, safety, cost and budget, and improving operational efficiencies. Strategic and tactical responsibility for implementing engineering strategy and strategic operational goals to exceed customer expectations for product development, quality, cost and delivery, maximizing efficiency, optimizing and driving engineering excellence. Oversees hiring, training, performance management, and provides leadership and coaching to ensure a well-trained, motivated and goal oriented work force.
Duties:
· Establish strategy and best practices for staff to ensure achievement of overall business objectives.
· Direct and coordinate the on-time and on-budget design, development and release of new models and new features to existing models.
· Ensure that new products and features follow all engineering specifications, including staffing requirements, work procedures and duty assignments.
· Coordinate with manufacturing to ensure manufacturability of product while maintaining quality, safety and environmental standards while achieving cost and time targets.
· Lead Program Management to ensure cross functional activity required for project execution.
· Lead Advanced Supplier Quality to ensure proper material PPAP for model launch and feature introduction.
· Work with Sales & Marketing department to aggregate VOC data to identify consumer market opportunities and trends, and drive product development.
· Works with Customer Service to address trends in warranty costs and issues for continuous improvement.
· Ensure strong communication between teams under leadership to facilitate exchange of information and to implement change and improvements.
· Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance of all engineered systems.
· Work collaboratively, negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate delivery and compliance with the engineering strategy
· Work with the rest of the leadership team to decide which engineering projects are the highest priority against the business targets and which can be executed with the available resource.
· Report on Engineering activities on a regular basis to the Senior Management team, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of the relevant KPIs.
· Communicate with stakeholders the impact of market and technology change and potential effects on engineering. Recommend solutions without compromising quality or service while optimizing cost.
· Direct Intellectual Property strategy, interfacing with internal and external legal teams and Senior Management to ensure protection of innovations.
· Contribute to new business initiatives and projects and review and communicate the impact on engineering activities
· Prepare the annual Engineering budget and forecasts and all capital expenditure proposals as well as ensuring compliance with customer and legal requirements. Manage the budget from identification to completion of projects.
· Work with the Engineering team to translate strategy into specific annual performance goals and departmental objectives. including KPIs, and to track them.
· Promotes and demonstrates workplace safety.
· Supports and promotes Continual Improvement mindset
· Ensures that all environmental policies are to be enforced.
Education & Work Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline (Engineering Masters or MBA preferred) and 10 years demonstrated Engineering leadership experience within the Leisure (marine, powersports, RV) or Transportation industry. Demonstrable experience of leading an engineering function with a proven track record in strategic engineering leadership delivering effective engineering strategies, policies, processes and systems. Experience and training in DVP, DFMEA, PPAP, root-cause analysis, cost modeling, Lean, Six-Sigma, benchmarking, best practices, and VA/VE. Ability to communicate well both written and verbal and lead by example. Must be able to work in a team atmosphere along with the ability to hold staff accountable and set appropriate targets. Environmental Conditions:
Works in both office and plant environment. Office environment has controlled temperature, humidity and noise levels. Plant environment varies with outside temperature and noise levels vary in different production areas. Effective near vision or near vision accommodation is required. Talking and hearing are required. Minimal bending, stooping, walking, and stair climbing are required as is lifting items of moderate weight. Crest Marine quality standards and safety rules and regulations are mandatory.
Travel: Moderate amount of travel (up to 25%) required.
