Nature of Work
The Director of Gift Planning is primarily responsible for cultivating gifts and establishing new funds for both new and current fundholders, including complex gifts, life income gifts (such as gift annuities), and bequest gifts. This work includes meeting with individuals, families, and businesses (as well as their legal and financial advisors), discussing the various fund and giving options available at the Community Foundation of Louisville, drafting fund and gift agreements, and preparing other gift-related documents. Through this work, the Director of Gift Planning will cultivate and enhance relationships with prospects and current fundholders, provide an unmatched level of personal engagement and customer service, and help the Foundation grow its assets. The Director of Gift Planning also oversees the Foundation’s Landrum Society, which honors individuals who have named the Foundation in their estate plans.
This individual will work closely with the Foundation’s Director of Advisor Services and Business Development to coordinate outreach efforts, provide seamless services to new fundholders, and establish new funds.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist individuals, families, businesses, and other foundations in establishing philanthropic plans and creating funds at the Foundation through lifetime and planned gifts.
- Build relationships with current fundholders, prospects, and advisors in order to cultivate new gifts.
- Draft fund agreements, fund amendments, gift agreements, gift annuity contracts, and other legal documents related to new funds and gifts being accepted by the Foundation.
- Work with the Foundation’s Gift Acceptance Committee and Real Estate Asset Legacy Foundation of Kentucky to accept complex gifts, including shares of privately held companies and real estate.
- Serve as the Foundation’s planned giving expert and in-house technical resource on financial and tax issues relating to charitable giving, including staying abreast of federal and state laws concerning charitable giving, estate planning, donor advised funds, etc.
- Oversee and steward the Foundation’s Landrum Society members, including helping to plan an annual appreciation event.
- Manage and oversee two of the Foundation’s affiliate foundations outside of Louisville.
- Participate in and/or lead presentations, educational sessions, and other Foundation events for professional advisors, prospects, and current fundholders.
- Respond to inquiries from individuals and groups about the Foundation’s services and products offered to donors, their advisors, and charitable organizations.
- Maintain fundholder, prospect, and advisor information in the Foundation’s computer databases.
- Maintain the Foundation’s commitment to providing the highest level of customer service to its referral sources, fundholders, and other constituents.
- Participate in local and regional professional advisor, estate planning, and/or gift-planning membership groups.
- Other assignments and special projects as assigned by the Vice President, Philanthropic Services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional communication, writing, and interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to be an active listener, gain trust, and form genuine connections with individuals.
- Knowledgeable of charitable giving strategies and techniques, including the tax and estate planning laws relevant to charitable giving.
- Familiarity with Louisville’s existing philanthropic and professional advisor communities.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to exercise good judgment and be a team player is essential, including having a flexible and collaborative work style.
- A passion for and commitment to the highest level of customer service is required.
- A passion for philanthropy and our local community.
- Proven success in building and maintaining long-term relationships is required.
- Familiarity with a client management database is expected.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Additional degree or credential required, such as a Masters, JD, Certified Financial Planner (CFP), or Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP®).
- At least five years of experience in a professional work setting required, preferably in gift planning, donor stewardship, or donor relationship management.
- A background in financial planning, planned giving, and/or trusts and estates is preferred.
- Experience in customer service and/or relationship management preferred.
- Professional in manner, appearance, and communications.

Physical Requirements
This position may require the ability to lift objects of at least 15 pounds in weight. Job duties require approximately 75% sitting/typing and 25% moving around. Physical requirements will vary depending upon the specific duties to be accomplished. In addition, it is a requirement of this position that the successful candidate be able to maintain a physical presence in the Louisville headquarters offices regularly and consistently and for the full regular working week. Access to and ability to operate a vehicle is required for work-related travel. Attendance may be required at special events during normal working hours or outside the normal work week.
Compensation
The position of Gift Planning Officer is a professional, full-time, exempt staff assignment, and will be eligible to participate in the Foundation’s Employee Health and Benefits Plan as set forth in the Foundation’s personnel policies. Compensation will be set according to the Foundation’s approved compensation policy.
