Position Overview
The Ferguson Group (TFG) is a bipartisan government relations consulting firm headquartered in Washington, DC, that represents the largest number of local governments and public agencies of any firm in Washington. We are searching for a knowledgeable and experienced Project Accountant to join our team and support our project-based financial operations. The Project Accountant will be responsible for managing financial aspects of projects, ensuring accurate and timely invoicing in accordance with contracts, financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations. This role will work closely with the Controller, project managers, and other stakeholders to provide financial oversight and support for all lobbying, grants, and consulting projects.
Responsibilities
- Project Financial Management: Oversee financial aspects of projects, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Invoicing and Revenue Recognition: Set up projects in alignment with contract terms. Prepare and issue project invoices and monitor receivables, ensuring accurate and timely revenue recognition in accordance with company policies and GAAP.
- Manage consultant invoices and release as appropriate for payment.
- Cost Tracking: Monitor and analyze project costs, ensuring they are in line with the approved budget and identifying any opportunities, risks or variances.
- Budget Preparation: Assist project managers in the preparation and maintenance of project budgets, providing financial insights and recommendations.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare detailed project financial reports, including budget vs. actual analyses, and present findings to project managers and senior leadership.
- Compliance and Auditing: Ensure project financials comply with relevant regulations and assist with internal and external audits.
- Expense Management: Review and approve project-related expenses, ensuring they are necessary, reasonable, and within budget.
- Variance Analysis: Conduct variance analysis to identify discrepancies between budgeted and actual costs, and work with project managers to develop corrective actions.
- Ad hoc Financial Support: Provide financial support and analysis for various projects as needed.
Qualifications
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of project accounting experience, preferably in a professional services organizations.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including GAAP.
- Proficiency in multiple ERP systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar).
- Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to create complex financial models and analyses.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High level of integrity and professionalism.
- Experience in a lobbying firm or similar environment is a plus.
