EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Lead Carpenter/Welder
NASHVILLE CHILDREN’S THEATRE (NCT) seeks a knowledgeable, collaborative, and detail-oriented Lead Carpenter/Welder to help build and create shows for our 2024-2025 season’s programming.
The Lead Carpenter/Welder is a full-time salaried position starting at $45,000.00+, commensurate with experience, with benefits. A moving stipend can be provided for the right candidate. The successful candidate will have relevant experience in their field(s) in order to best serve the needs of our productions, assist and take lead on scenic build and special projects, assist in show and shop maintenance, assist in NCT special projects, and help the theatre continue to fulfill its mission in bringing professional theatre to young audiences in Middle Tennessee.
ABOUT NASHVILLE CHILDREN’S THEATRE:
Founded in 1931, NCT is the oldest professional children’s theatre in the United States, and produces six or more professional productions for audiences ranging from birth through middle school and their families. A team who share a common commitment to theatre for young audiences and arts education backs every production. NCT casts adult, professional actors and is affiliated with Actors' Equity Association, the union for professional actors in the United States. The season spans 36 weeks and features more than 300 performances for both school groups and family audiences. As part of the theatre's "School Performance Series," between 55,000 and 65,000 schoolchildren attend performances each year, and an additional 20,000 kids and adults attend the theatre's "Public Performance Series." The theatre offers school and weekend tickets to ensure that students and families from throughout the regions can attend at an affordable price. NCT offers a line-up of plays exploring issues and experiences young people encounter in contemporary society, and adaptations of classical literature, historical subjects, and award-winning children's books.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Works with the Technical Director, shop staff and over-hire to help build various scenic or prop elements for all productions;
· Be a self-starter, team player, leader, and ability to stay on task is a must;
· Able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds comfortably;
· Ability to work comfortably at heights of 50 feet;
· Shows skills in carpentry and woodworking; welding experience preferred;
· Able to read shop drawings created in CAD based software and create cut lists, assemble, etc.;
· Ability to collaborate with the Technical Director and other team members to come up with solutions relating to scenery;
· Ability to lead a team efficiently when Technical Director is unavailable;
· Able to follow safety protocols and work in a safe manner;
· Attend and participate in all scheduled production, department, and staff meetings as needed;
· Support other activities at the theatre like rentals, company events, educational programming, facility maintenance, and all other activities taking place in the theatre or in association with the theatre as assigned by the Technical Director or Director of Production;
· Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Production or the Executive Artistic Director.
REQUIREMENTS:
· Three to five years’ experience with a theatrical/performing arts or commercial shop environment or equivalent preferred but not required;
· Mastery of wood related construction and fabrication techniques;
· Prior experience leading scenery construction and theatrical logistic processes preferred but not required;
· Knowledge of theatrical best-practices, OSHA standard safety practices and MSDS paperwork/information;
· Proven ability to motivate, manage, and coordinate with staff members and over-hire;
· Excellent interpersonal, organizational, collaborative and communication skills;
· Additional experience in automated rigging control, deck automation, pneumatics and hydraulics is desirable;
· Knowledge of electrics and sound a plus, but not required;
· Ability and willingness to work long days with irregular schedules with a positive attitude and a great sense of humor;

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This full-time, salaried position will report directly to the Technical Director.
