General Description: Under the direction of the Augmentative & Alternative Communications (AAC) Program Coordinator and the Managing Director of Programs, you will be responsible for evaluating our consumer’s communication needs.

Essential duties:
- Recommends, adapts, modifies and provides materials, strategies and equipment to support communication skill in educational, employment, medical and social settings.
- Set up device trials and evaluate responses to determine the appropriateness of technology for individuals in multiple environments.
- Assist staff in implementing suitable programs to meet the needs of individual consumers.
- Participate in staff training in communication areas.
- Participate in staff individual Program Plan (IPP) meetings.
- Supervision of speech students.
- Prepare and deliver comprehensive written reports as required in a timely manner.
- Regular meeting with the Managing Director of Programs to deliver activity reports.

- Knowledge of Alternative/Augmentative communication principles and practices:
- a. Speech and language development.
- b. Cultural and linguistic differences.
- c. Current research-based instructional methodologies.
- d. Technology and strategies associated with individuals having communication delays and disabilities.
- e. Various aspects of aided and unaided AAC systems.
- f. Features of various AAC tools.
- g. Potential funding sources related to AAC.
- h. Roles of communication partners.
- i. Evidence-based practices.
- Developmental stages of communication (pre-verbal to verbal) including the understanding of communicative intent, forms of communication, functional communication and use of core vocabulary when using AAC.
- Evaluating individual’s symbolic skills.
- Various aspects of aided and unaided AAC systems.
- General purposes and application of AAC systems.
- Perceptual skills that are necessary to access different AAC systems.
- How seating and positioning influences access to AAC systems and the ability to collaborate with other professionals to optimize seating and positioning for AAC use.
- The broad array of switches and corresponding skills necessary to use them to access AAC devices.
- Methods used to customize AAC systems.
- Laws/regulations regarding individual’s rights to access AAC and other forms of assistive technology.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Master’s Degree in the area of Speech-Language Pathology or Communicative Disorders and Sciences in required.
- Advanced training and experience in Augmentative Communication to include; recommendations, customization and implementation of low to high-tech tools and strategies, including speech-generating devices is required.
- One (1) year working with developmentally disabled individuals.
- Specialized training and/or experience in Augmentative Alternative Communication is preferred.
- Strong background in working with individuals with complex needs.
- Comprehensive understanding of the AAC evaluation process.
- FA/CPR certified or the ability to be FA/CPR certified.
Credentials:
- Valid California Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential or a Clinical or Rehabilitation Services Credential with Speech, Language and Hearing authorization is require.
- An ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Language Pathology is preferred.
- An Assistive Technology Certificate is preferred.
Communication Skills:
- Ability to accurately document consumer information, (e.g. assessments, goals, etc.).
- Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from consumers, their families, care providers, employers and the general public.
- Ability to effectively present information to consumers, their families, care providers, employers, and the general public.
- Ability to teach a variety of skills to consumers.
- Ability to communicate with persons who are nonverbal or who use augmentative communication devices.
Reasoning & Mental Ability:
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
- Ability to resolve problems, recall details and be able to concentrate.
- Must be able to think clearly and respond appropriately to emergencies, complete work within deadlines, and work with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to prioritize and organize work effectively.
- Ability to work independently.
Physical Ability & Stress Level:
- Ability to tolerate a moderate to high stress level.
- Ability to lift and transfer from 75-100 lbs., push and/or pull up to 250 lbs.
- Ability to provide support to consumers in community environments.
Work Environment:
- Office/classroom setting.
- Low to moderate noise level.
- Must have access to reliable transportation to meet with consumers and attend meetings.
- Exposure to blood born pathogens could occur when administering first aid to consumers. Hepatitis B vaccine is offered to all employees at no cost to employee.
