Job Summary: Assist Project leaders in successfully rearing, tagging and releasing white seabass. The Technician is responsible for helping to provide high quality marine fish for all production and research aspects of the Program as assigned. Live animal caretaking occurs daily year-round, so the ability to work weekends and holidays is required.
Primary Duties:
1. Assist with the production of larval & juvenile fish, including required feed allocation, fish health and water quality assessments as it relates to fish production in rearing systems. Assist in all other aspects of fish husbandry as needed.
2. Help ensure that all safety and biosecurity measures are being complied with.
3. . As assigned, assist with inventory of all feed supplies and ensure that feed and feed supplies are stocked in a manner that promotes maximum freshness and quality.
4. Ensure that the fish rearing systems are fully operational at all times so that SOPs can be followed precisely. Assist in the maintenance of all fish rearing and life support systems and equipment. Identify and report problems as they occur.
5. Document all procedures and keep neat and accurate records of all husbandry activities related to juvenile rearing; assist with reporting needs as assigned.
6. Stay current with latest technologies related to fish rearing. Assist with research experiments as directed. Assist, as needed, with emergencies that may occur at the hatchery.
Qualifications:
- College degree in biology preferred.
- Experience with marine aquaculture and aquariums preferred.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must possess mobility to work in laboratory and office buildings and outdoor settings, to use standard laboratory and field equipment, to use a computer.
- Work areas may include wet and windy environments subject to weather exposure. Indoor activities include office work and bench laboratory work.
- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone with accommodation.
- Must be able to regularly work weekends and potentially odd hours and holidays.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driving license and insurability to drive an HSWRI vehicle.
- Physical ability to team lift and carry up to 50lbs.
