Roles / Responsibilities:
Perform molecular biology work in a DNA sequencing core facility.
- Evaluate RNA and DNA quality and quantity.
- Perform library preparation for sequencing: may include Illumina short read, PacBio and Nanopore long read technologies.
- Keep current in the literature of new DNA sequencing technology and sample preparation techniques.
- Develop alternative methods for library preparation when opportunities arise to automate, improve library quality, or realize cost-savings.
- Make presentations as needed on new or improved techniques in DNA/RNA sequencing.
- Perform DNA, RNA analyses to optimize DNA and RNA sequencing methodology; recognize and troubleshoot quality problems in DNA and RNA sequencing data; work with staff on refining sample preparation and sequencing pipeline to improve quality and control costs.
Routine laboratory operations:
- Enter sample tracking and project management data into relational databases.
- Maintain accurate tracking of investigator DNA/RNA samples, including time of receipt, location, and status.
- Maintain database of DNA/RNA samples and their freezer locations.
- Timely return of investigator samples after project completion.
- Operate and maintain scientific equipment, including routine washes.
- Learn the operation and maintenance of existing scientific equipment and new equipment as it is acquired by reading the relevant manuals and attending relevant tutorials.
- Keep track of Preventative Maintenance (PM) accounts and service contracts; alert Directory when renewals are due.
- Interface with vendor support and field engineers to solve technical problems with equipment under PM accounts.
- Maintain a clean lab environment, ensure the lab conforms to safety regulations.
- Anticipate reagent needs and order new reagents in advance, especially Illumina library prep, sequencing kits, and Fragment Analyzer kits.
- Monitor technical bulletins and ensure that current recommended procedures are followed and current versions of software, manuals, etc. are in use.
- Maintain an orderly and detailed laboratory notebook; document the planning, execution and resulting data from experiments.
- Maintain current copies of all manuals for instruments and kits in the GCBC. Include relevant user bulletins and technical updates.
- Maintain reagent supplies, order reagents when needed, keep a log of reagents purchased and associated CANs.
- Attend laboratory meetings and report on issues relating to GCBC.
- Maintain proper techniques for the safe handling and disposal of reagents/chemicals.

Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate information through critical thinking and apply information in a logical and objective method.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
