Position Overview
The Director of Staff Development’s chief responsibilities include planning, organizing, developing, and directing all in-service educational programs throughout the facility in accordance with current federal, state, local and corporate standards, regulations, and guidelines to assure that the highest degree of quality care is provided to our residents at all times.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Staff Development holds a position of trust, responsibility, and leadership within the facility. Responsibilities for the Director of Staff Development include:
- Plan, develop, direct, evaluate, and coordinate educational and on-the-job training programs.
- Develop and participate in the planning, conducting, and scheduling of orientation programs that orient newly hired personnel to their position, the facility's policies and procedures, resident rights and responsibilities, etc.
- Secure, develop and maintain records, reports, instructional manuals, reference materials, etc., pertinent to in-service educational programs.
- Assist licensed nursing personnel (i.e., RNs, LVNs, and Nurse Aides) in obtaining in-service training to keep their license current in accordance with state law. Provide in-service training as necessary/required.
- Assist the Administrator in developing the Nurse Aide Training curriculum used by the facility, including hands-on demonstrations. Submit to state agency as required.
- Create written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator, as necessary/required, concerning the training, education, and performance of facility personnel.
- Assist in the recruitment of competent nursing personnel including, but not limited to, Registered Nurses, Licensed Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Restorative Nursing Aides.
- Assist in the completion of performance evaluations of nursing personnel as requested by the Director of Nursing Services.
- Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, continuing education etc., to keep informed of current changes in the long-term care field, as well as to maintain a professional status.
- Assist in the review of accident/incident reports and establish an effective accident prevention program.
- Ensure that the resident's rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage complaints, are well established and maintained at all times. Ensure that all residents receive care in a manner and in an environment that maintains or enhances their quality of life without abridging the safety and rights of other residents.
- Must be available to work on the floor as Charge Nurse as necessary and appropriate as directed by Director of Nursing or Administrator.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Administrator.
Qualifications
Education:
- Must possess an LVN certification from an accredited program, college or university.
- Must possess a certificate as a Director of Staff Development or qualify to participate in an accredited course.
- Membership in professional organization(s) is preferred.
Training & Experience
- Required minimum two years’ experience in a leadership or management role within the nursing profession.
- Must possess knowledge of Title 22, OBRA, and other regulations, guidelines, and standards governing the long-term care industry
- Must be knowledgeable of nursing practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to long-term care.
- Must possess comprehensive knowledge and commitment to the principles of nursing care standards and standards of practice for long term care facilities.
- Must commit to the Mission and Core Values of the organization.
- Must possess the ability to communicate tactfully with customers including residents, family members, visitors, facility employees, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
- Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
- Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, and implement the training necessary for staff to meet and/or comply with the goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, etc., of the facility on a daily basis.
- Must possess a high degree of personal accountability, responsibility and the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
- Applicant must have 1 year experience as an LVN providing direct patient care in a LTC facility in addition to 1 year of experience planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in nursing, or 2 years of FT experience as a licensed nurse at least 1 year of which must be in the provision of direct patient care in a nursing facility
The final candidate must successfully pass The Reutlinger Community's post offer, pre-employment testing which includes a criminal background check, drug test, TB screen test, COVID-19 test and health screen with or without back evaluation depending on position.
