Serve with the Healthy Minds Alliance AmeriCorps Program
Healthy Minds Alliance is a community-based approach to the mental health crisis utilizing evidence-based/ informed programs in diverse communities across the nation. AmeriCorps Members will serve as certified Mental Health Gatekeeper Training Instructors and train community members on how to support people with mental health challenges.
Location: Bloomington, MN (Hybrid; in-person and remote)
HMA SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructor Certification: AmeriCorps member will undergo training to become a certified instructor in QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) for youth ages 14-24 (high school and college youth).
Mental Health Gatekeeper Program Instructor: AmeriCorps members will take the lead in conducting mental health certification courses, certifying members of the public. These courses will equip participants with the skills to identify, prevent, and provide support to individuals facing mental health challenges.
Community Outreach: AmeriCorps member will advocate for mental health awareness whenever possible and provide outreach to the local community to schedule mental health gatekeeper training. The member’s primary role will be to carry out training through SAVE’s Green Bandana Project, training high school and college youth in Teen QPR.
The Green Bandana Project is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program for high school and college students that is dedicated to preventing suicide through increasing awareness of vital mental health resources available to students and promoting help-seeking behavior. After a short orientation and basic suicide prevention training, student participants carry a green bandana and resource cards, and pledge to be safe individuals that can be approached for mental health and suicide prevention information and resources.
Staff Support: AmeriCorps members will also assist SAVE’s Green Bandana Project staff with other program tasks including, but not limited to:
- Working with Green Bandana Project staff in drafting and sending outreach communications to prospective high schools and colleges/universities.
- Work with Green Bandana Project staff to facilitate orientation to the Green Bandana Project program for high schools and colleges/universities followed by facilitating Teen QPR.
- Gather feedback from participants and staff to identify areas for improvement for orientation and QPR training through surveys and one-on-one meetings.
- Carry out Teen QPR Gatekeeper training in person and virtually for college and university students that are not participants of the Green Bandana Project.
HMA Service Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Attend a pre-service screening interview
- Complete a criminal background check, drug test and fingerprinting
- Successfully complete designated mental health evidence-based/ informed training
- Maturity, dependability, sensitivity and a desire to help others
- Adherence to SAVE’s policies and procedures
- Participate in monthly calls held nationally by Health360
- Complete required CDC and Public Health AmeriCorps trainings
HMA Experience Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Personal and/ or professional knowledge of mental health topics
- Strong teaching and/ or training skills and experience, especially with adult learners
- Understanding of mental health issues and resources
- Skills and experience facilitating diverse groups and creating/maintaining a positive, effective learning environment
- Knowledge about mental health resources in their community and state
- Positive attitudes towards individuals with mental illnesses
- Enthusiasm for reducing the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and addiction disorders
HMA Details and Benefits:
- Complete a 10-month commitment
- Complete 1700 service hours – 40 hours per week; 5 holidays and 2.5 personal days
- Hybrid (in-person and remote), minimum of 3 days in the office
- $19,000 stipend for service – paid biweekly in 22 equal installments
