Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher - Intervention Specialist will be responsible for planning, developing, delivering, and evaluating appropriate individualized educational services, learning programs, and instruction for students with special educational and social adjustment needs.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Identifying individual student needs through formal and informal assessments
- Collaborating with general education teachers regarding the educational, social, emotional, and physical needs and objectives of each student
- Review referral data, history, and assessment data to develop appropriate goals and objectives for each student
- Management of Individualized Educational Plans (IEP’s) for each student to include:
- Planning, development, and implementation
- Preparation of instructional materials and lesson plans
- Review of IEP’s with parents, school administrators, and general education teachers
- Monitor, evaluate, and document each student’s progress utilizing appropriate measurements and assessment devices
- Modify and adapt conventional educational programs and curriculum to meet the requirements of special needs students
- Maintain regular communication with parents by means of email, phone calls, conferences, and progress reports
- Manage student behavior through monitoring, supervising, and assessing behavioral patterns
- Instruct students on socially acceptable behaviors and personal development skills
- Prepare students for inclusion and transition to mainstream
- Maintain accurate and complete records of lesson plans and student performance in accordance with school district regulations and legal requirements
- Ensure student safety and supervision at all times
- Collaboration with parents for referrals to outsides services (i.e. psychologists, therapists, etc.)
- Responsible for knowing school crisis protocol and risk assessment
- Participation in school events, both onsite and offsite, when required
- Attending meetings, staff trainings, conferences, and other ongoing learning programs
- Informing students of additional learning opportunities and setting them up for success
- Builds relationships with parents and/or guardians to ensure exceptional “customer service”, supplying them with pertinent information
- Adhere to the school’s student discipline framework, which encompasses PBIS, Restorative Discipline, and Trauma-Informed Teaching practices
- Is held to a high ethical and legal standard dictated by profession
- Any other duties as assigned
Skills & Requirements
- Proven experience as a Special Education Teacher or equivalent position working with children with special needs
- Ability to design effective programs for diverse children
- Proficient knowledge of classroom policies and procedures
- Highly organized
- Strong communication skills
- Strong people skills and affinity for children
- Excellent observation and analytical skills
- Flexible to work extended hours to conduct meetings with parents/guardians
Endorsements/Licenses (required)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Special Education
- Valid State Teaching Certification
- Special Education or Intervention Specialist License
