Seeking a full time, School Social Worker to work with students and families with special needs in a preschool setting in Whitestone, Queens.
The Life Skills Preschool is a special needs program servicing students throughout New York City. Our mission is to provide structure and support for children to develop to their full potential, respect the diversity and unique contributions of all, offer instruction that is individualized and developmentally appropriate, promote a child-centered, safe and supportive environment, engage parents, the community and school members in a collaborative team-approach, and to inspire a lifetime to learning. Our program seeks to provide education and related therapy to special needs children in the least restrictive environment, to better prepare them for a successful future.
Education/Credentials:
Master's Degree is Social Work
Qualifications:
- 2 to 5 years’ childhood experience required
- Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Mandarin required
- Proficient with MS Office Suite (MS Word; Excel, PowerPoint)
- Working knowledge of app-based technology and smartphones required
- Strong written & verbal communication skills required
The duties of the position are:
- Directly support children’s social and emotional health to ensure their well-being and safety through one-on-one and small group work.
- Promote developmentally appropriate practices and strategies to nurture children’s social emotional development growth.
- Design child and family support plans and interventions that are culturally and linguistically appropriate and responsive to cultural differences among staff and families.
- Coordinate stakeholders (children, families, teachers, service providers) and monitor delivery of support plans to ensure follow through.
- Educate parents and teachers on children’s mental health
- Liaison between Lifeskills Preschool, Parent/Caregivers and Foster Care Agencies
- Oversee Family Service Coordinators (Bronx and Whitestone)
- Provide support with individual child behavior and classroom support
- Communicate effectively with children, families, and colleagues, and respond to family concerns promptly and effectively.
- Establish a professional rapport and strong relationship with stakeholders: children, staff and families.
- Serves as facilitator for parent and school community concerns and issues including, for example, school policies or facilities issues.
- Conducts outreach to engage parents in their children’s education.
- Convenes regular parent meetings and events around topics of key concerns to parents.
