Research Technician
- (3295307)
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
We are seeking a bright and motivated individual for a Research Technician I position in the laboratory of Caroline Sokol, M.D., Ph.D., in the Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases (CIID). The CIID is a multidisciplinary research center whose goal is to discover new molecular pathways in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
Many diseases are caused or worsened by immune system dysfunction. For example, allergic diseases are caused by immune activation against harmless environmental proteins. Using mouse and human models of allergy, our laboratory studies how the nervous system interacts with the immune system to initiate allergic immune responses. In order to do this, we utilize a wide variety of research techniques including gene expression analysis, flow cytometry and microscopy. We are looking for a research technician to play an interactive and integral role in these studies.
Candidates for this position should have a solid background in biology and a strong interest in immunology and molecular biology. This position would be ideal for those candidates interested in gaining significant experience in biomedical research and considering future graduate studies.
Duties will include, but are not exclusive to:
- general husbandry and maintenance of mouse colonies
- participation in general laboratory responsibilities, including ordering and organizing laboratory supplies and ensuring maintenance of equipment
- molecular biological techniques, including DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, and quantitative PCR
- immunizing mice with protein antigens
- isolation and purification of primary cells from mouse samples
- flow cytometry
- immunofluorescence staining for general and confocal microscopy
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s Degree, with coursework in related fields (such as Immunology and Molecular Biology or Biochemistry) strongly preferred
- previous laboratory experience is highly preferred, but all techniques will be taught upon joining the lab
- proficiency with computer software, including Power Point and Excel
- must be reliable, organized, and able to work independently as well as with other members of the team and research center
- excellent communication and interpersonal skills
