Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America. Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities.
Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel.
Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.
Responsibilities include:

Operates Snyder Dressing Mills in Machine Shop #1 to perform machining operations on all types of product suitable for the mill with a high degree of productivity and with a minimum spoilage of work.

Operates mills to obtain maximum efficiency with minimum wear on machine and cutting tools.

Possesses thorough knowledge of the proper setting of console.

Makes minor adjustments to electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical equipment.

Sets programming on mill according to prints or production sketches to properly machine pieces automatically, manually making final adjustments to mill to obtain proper tolerance.

Makes tool and template changes and adjustments as required.

Uses various types of measuring devices to check first piece machined after each change or adjustment in programming or tools and makes any necessary adjustments to ascertain that product will be machined according to specifications.

May be required to direct/operate a crane to move product and/or position on machine.

Segregates questionable wheels.

Checks order numbers of product to be machined and ascertains complete information relating to machining details and when required, obtains prints, sketches, gauges, tools, etc., necessary to perform machining, returning such when material on order is completed.

Checks piece on mill from prior shift to determine that all mill settings are correct. Always leaves last piece machined on mill at end of turn for checking by operator relieving unless otherwise instructed by supervisor.

Is required to place identification on product machined.

Cleans and lubricates mill. Obtains lubricants from storage in department.

Reports to supervisor immediately any repairs or major adjustments required and assists service personnel in performing same.

Keeps turnings cleared away from mill to prevent interference with proper operation.

Keeps equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.

Requires no supervision except occasional work orders.
Qualifications required:

Must have a High School Diploma or GED.

Must have a valid Driver's License.

Must be available to work all three shifts including overtime and weekends.

Must demonstrate self-motivation and problem solving skills in a fast- paced setting.

Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time.

Experience performing mathematical concepts related to machining.

Ability to safely and precisely operate/utilize CNC milling machines, lathes, grinders, and associated tooling including set up.

Experience accurately utilizing precision measurement equipment and hold tolerances.

Experience in reading and understanding blue prints.
