The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a PT Library Associate I for its Jordan Newby Anchor Branch. This position performs customer service roles at the public service desks by answering and attending to customers' questions in person and over the phone. Engages in youth programming with regular programs for the public, and outreach activities.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $19.95 Hourly
Essential functions include but are not limited to:

Assists with developing and implementing youth programming on a regular basis.

Assists with the maintenance of the branch’s youth library space and collection.

Connects with community organizations and schools for outreach and partnership opportunities.

Involved in supervision responsibilities in absence of an Area supervisor:

Oversees and guides volunteers when the need arises.

Provides customer service at the public service desk by assisting patrons with reference questions involving resources in print, the internet, databases, community information resources and readers advisory.

Receives deposits and posts money for daily cash report.

Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans and collecting fees.

Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time, lifts up to 25 pounds from ground to waist-level, bend, stoop, push, pull, and complete tasks requiring manual dexterity to retrieve books and other materials from shelves/cabinets ranging in height from floor level to approximately 6 feet, and unpack incoming books/orders.

Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems.

Ability to use good judgement in daily services to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions.

High degree of comfort learning new technologies.

Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
One year of experience in library or related services.
Work Hours: 20 hours per week
