The purpose of your job position is to plan, direct, evaluate and coordinate the in-service education and orientation programs in accordance with current federal, state and local regulations as well as facility policies and procedures.
As the Director of Staff Development you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

1. Assume the authority, responsibility and accountability of directing the in-service educational programs.
2. Plan, direct, evaluate and coordinate in-service education and orientation programs designed to assure appropriate staff performance and understanding of their duties.
3. Orient newly assigned staff personnel to their duties and understanding of the facility policies and procedures.
4. Develop and maintain instructional manuals, reference materials, resource materials, etc. as applicable to the facility orientation and in-service educational programs.
5. Develop, maintain, implement and follow the facility yearly calendar which reflects ongoing educational and in-service training in all topics required by federal, state and local regulations as well as the facility policies and procedures.
6. Secure, develop and maintain records of attendance, reports and instructional materials relating to orientation provided and in-service educational programs.
7. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment throughout the facility by displaying a personal role model of such behavior.
8. Serve on various committees of the facility as required by existing regulations.
9. Remain current on new development, current regulations and guidelines, as well as professional standards by attending and participating in professional associations, activities, and programs as well as by reading professional journals.
10. Perform rounds to observe facility staff performance and to evaluate staff compliance with facility policies and procedures.
11. Ensure that individual employee training records are maintained and filed in the employee’s personnel file.
12. Other related duties and responsibilities that may become necessary to assure that the needs of the facility are met.
1. Plan, attend and participate in in-service educational classes and on-the-job training programs offered in the facility.
2. Attend and participate in continuing educational programs and professional organizations designed to keep abreast of changes in his/her profession.
1. Follow all established safety procedures and precautions when operating materials and equipment related to educational and orientation programs.
2. Report equipment malfunctions or breakdowns as soon as possible; report all unsafe/hazardous conditions immediately.
3. Report findings of infection control policies and procedures violations to the appropriate Department Head as soon as possible.
1. Ensure supplies have been replenished in the staff training room as necessary.
2. Assure that work/assignment areas are neat, clean and training equipment is secured and covered before leaving such areas on breaks, end of work day, etc.
1. Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent Resident care information to assure Resident rights are protected.
2. Assure that Resident’s rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage complaints, are followed.
3. Ensure staffs are aware of Residents rights as they relate to the operation of a skilled nursing facility through appropriate orientation and continual in-service training on the federal, state and local rules and regulations relating to the enforcement of Residents rights.
1. Works in well-lighted/ventilated office areas, as well as throughout the facility and its premises.
2. Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during working hours.
3. Is subject to frequent interruptions.
4. Is involved with Residents, family members, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions/circumstances, sometimes subject to hostile and emotionally upset Residents, family members, personnel, visitors, etc.
5. Attends and participate in professional/community/civic health matters/projects.
6. Is subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout the day.
7. May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to the Aids and Hepatitis B viruses.
Must possess, as a minimum, a high school diploma and at least a current certification as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN); license must be kept current at all times. Applicant must be certified as a Staff Developer (if certification is not current, such certification must be obtained within three (3) months of employment if the applicant is not currently certified at the time of hire).
1. Must have at least two years of nursing experience and at least one year experience as a licensed nurse providing care and services to chronically ill or elderly patients in an acute care hospital, skilled nursing facility, intermediate care facility, home care, hospice care, or other long term care setting. Must have completed a course in teaching adults or have one year verifiable experience in teaching adults or have one year of verifiable experience supervising nurse aides.
1. Must be able to read, write and speak clearly in the English language.
2. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action and to remain calm during emergency situations.
3. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, Residents, family members, visitors, and the general public.
4. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age and of good moral character.
5. Must possess the ability to work harmoniously with other department personnel.
6. Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing training processes.
7. Must possess the ability to plan and develop new programs.
8. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
9. Must display the ability to speak and move comfortably before groups and in one-to-one or small group interaction.
10. Must be willing to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary. Occasional nightshift work is required.
11. Must be able to assist disabled Residents who have limited vision or hearing to move about in the environment and to demonstrate to others how to handle this requirement; must demonstrate familiarity with skills needed for reality awareness and sensory stimulation to the environment.
1. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
2. Must be able to speak the English language in an understandable and clear manner.
3. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
4. Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
5. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with Residents, personnel, and support agencies.
6. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
7. Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
8. May be required to lift and move Residents or resident care equipment as well as training materials and supplies.
9. Must be able to move Residents sitting in bed, in wheelchairs or geri-chairs, and assist in the movement of disabled Residents using walkers or other aids in ambulation.
10. May be requested to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds while demonstrating safe and appropriate technique; must serve as a role model in appropriate lifting and transferring techniques for nursing and ancillary staff, always exhibiting proper body position and alignment, while maintaining Resident individual dignity and respect.
11. Must be able to operate office equipment including typewriter, fax and copy machines.
The Director of Staff Development is supervised by the Director of Nursing Services/Administrator.
