Title: Overnight Shelter Staff
Salary: $26.51 Hourly, Non-Exempt
Shift: 8:30pm-7:30am Wednesay-Friday & alternating Saturday
Location: Downtown Shelter
Reports To: Program Manager & Team Lead Supervisor(s)
This position has an introductory probationary period of 90 days.
THE POSITION: Shelter Staff interact with and maintain quality of living for shelter participants. Staff use trauma-informed care to create a safe, clean, and supportive environment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, duties such as meal distribution, cleaning tasks, etc.
THE PROGRAM: Located in the heart of Old Town, our Downtown shelter is geographically close to numerous peer agencies, resource providers, and transit lines for job access. The space is unique among shelters in Multnomah County in that it welcomes couples, pets, and all gender identities. With nightly scratch-made dinners and showers available 24/7, Downtown meets participants where they are in their journey, serving as a transformative stepping stone to regaining self-worth and embarking on sustainable pathways out of houselessness.
HIPAA REQUIREMENTS: This position will have access to Protected Health Information (PHI) during the course of their work activities. Applying the minimum necessary standard of HIPAA, the designated record sets to which this position may have access include all sections of the medical record, patient demographic information in the practice management system, etc. This position is required to read the content of these records only to the extent needed to accomplish the assigned tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that all areas utilized by participants and staff are clean, organized, and left in an orderly manner during and after each shift. This may include, but not limited to, cleaning waste, soiled clothing, dirty dishes, mopping, collecting trash, etc.
- Follow program protocols to maintain a safe environment for staff and participants.
- Process participant intakes and discharges with completion of associated forms as needed.
- Maintain all physical and electronic participant documentation, record keeping, write-ups, daily notes, etc. in an organized and timely manner.
- Assist in delivery of hygeine kits and essential supplies to participants.
- Assist in management of the food box program.
- Assist with participant advocacy.
- Maintain consistent, clear, and respectful communication with all staff, relevant Management and Director team members, programs, and community partners.
- Attend supervision, staff meetings, and any appropriate community professional meetings.
- Support and engage with the Development Team and Program Managers at Do Good fundraisers, activities, and other events.
- Participate in compliance, quality assurance, and quality improvement activities as directed.
- Physical ability to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, twist, reach, pull and lift heavy objects. The nature of this work requires the stamina to perform daily repetitive physical tasks.
- Adhere to all state and federal privacy and security regulations applicable to the program, and to Do Good Multnomah’s policies and agreements regarding confidentiality, privacy, and security.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Consistent, clear/direct, and compassionate communication with participants, staff, referrals, community partners, and vendors. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, problem solve, and complete tasks in a timely manner. Ability to organize multiple high-priority tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain accurate, confidential records and information in an organized manner.

- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with both participants and staff, including utilizing discernment to know what is appropriate to share and what is confidential.
