LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I
REPORTS TO
· Laboratory Department Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, or Branch Office Manager of a Regional Office
SUPERVISES
· None
MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
· High School Diploma or equivalent
· No Construction Materials Testing Experience Required
· Basic math skills (simple algebra)
· Basic computer skills to include a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access)
· Forklift operator’s certification a plus
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· Reliable transportation to and from work
· Must be able to work a wide variety of hours from early mornings into the evenings; must be able to work occasional weekends as needed
· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
· Must be able to perform tests as per written procedures
· Must be able to work in close proximity to co-workers
· Must be able to work in close proximity to materials testing equipment including cutting equipment and ovens operating at extremely hot temperatures
· Must be able to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time
· Must be able to remain alert and upright at all times while on the job
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Consistently shows up for work as scheduled
· Initially trains with experienced Laboratory Technician until able to perform each of the following construction materials testing procedures, unassisted, from start-to-finish, including the completion of all calculations and laboratory data sheets:
o Stripping, marking, and storing of concrete cylinders.
o Capping of concrete cylinders.
o Reducing samples to test size (splitting out) – able to perform this task by reading the work request.
o Sample preparation (breakdown) – knows the differences between Departments 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 procedures.
· Completes tasks and submits completed paperwork within appropriate time frame
· Promptly notifies lab supervisor of problems that arise
· Assists lead technicians with more advanced testing
· Adheres to established safety procedures
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
· Must be fluent in English
· Written – Handwriting must be legible; must be able to compose correspondence and prepare required reports, completely and accurately
· Verbal – Must be able to receive and follow through on instructions; maintains lines of communication, and communicates effectively, with supervisor, co-workers, clients, and contractors.
· Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, co-workers, clients, contractors, and agencies
