JOB TITLE: Housekeeper/ Laundry Worker
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This summarizes the major essential duties and responsibilities regularly performed and normally assigned to this position. Listed below are the duties in descending order of importance and are as clear and specific as possible. Other duties may be assigned that are not listed on this description. It may be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
- Washes, dries and folds resident laundry as required, facility bed linens, dietary linen, housekeeping mops and rags, etc. in a manner that will not damage equipment or items being processed.
- Wears the appropriate PPE when necessary to support laundry operations.
- Sorts garments and contaminated linens
- Responsible for the proper operation and care of laundry equipment, maintains clean laundry work area and equipment. Reports equipment malfunctions to the Director of Housekeeping
- Marks resident personal items and washes resident personal clothing as scheduled and maintains accurate log as directed.
- Keeps accurate count of all discards or reclaimed items.
- Keeps accurate counts of all laundry loads.
- Cleans and logs all lint screen cleanings.
- Cleans up laundry areas appropriately after each shift.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to demonstrate safe operation of commercial laundry and cleaning equipment with knowledge of laundry procedures. The ability to keep up with the flow of work and cooperation with other workers is expected. Some judgment involved in determining the size loads the machines can process efficiently and utilize proper washing technique required for items of various degrees of soil, particular fabric, and isolation items.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and/or walk, and bend and stoop. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. They must also be able to push and/or pull up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in well-lighted laundry area, which is sometimes hot, humid and noisy. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate (ex: washing machines and dryers).
OTHER WORK REQUIREMENTS: Must have a genuine interest in geriatric care and must believe in and uphold the philosophy of the facility. While in-service, training regarding the protection from communicable disease will be provided; there will continue to be a risk of contracting some type of disease or illness. To the extent the employee complies with precautionary measures this risk is reduced. A willingness to perform routine and repetitive tasks on a continuous basis. Some equipment that is used involves operating procedures.
