Senior Accountant Job Description
Overview: The Senior Accountant is a key Accounting Department employee for performing complex accounting and ensuring accurate, timely and relevant reporting on the Company’s activities. The Senior Accountant reports to the CFO.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Reporting:
- Prepare timely monthly and annual financial statements, including statements of cash flows.
- Compile and report on budget to actual results.
- Report on metrics versus prior periods and industry.
- Report on cost of products and services.
- Prepare ad hoc reports as requested by management.
2. Accounting:
- Perform complex accounting computations.
- Calculate accruals and prepare and record journal entries.
- Perform balance sheet and income statement reconciliations.
- Manage general ledger and maintain accounting systems.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of accounting data.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable laws and regulations.
- Assist in the development, implementation and enforcement of controls and SOP’s.
- Ensure accurate and timely payment of vendors.
- Communicate and resolve issues with vendors.
- Assist with the preparation and filing of sales, fuel, property and income taxes.
3. Cost Data and Analysis:
- Assist in developing performance metrics.
- Development and maintain product, service and project cost data.
- Calculate debt covenant ratios.
- Perform ad hoc audits and analysis as requested.
4. Planning, Budgeting, and Forecasting:
- Assist in the development of annual department budgets.
- Assist in cash flow forecasting.
5. Cash Management:
- Assist in the management of cash.
- Review, track and verify daily cash transactions.
- Report on sources and uses of cash and cash position.
6. Staff:
- Lead, motivate and direct accounts payable and general ledger staff.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate job descriptions.
- Ensure adequate cross training of staff and duties.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field.
- Proven experience as a senior accountant, preferably in a similar industry or complex organization.
- Strong math and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- High degree of integrity, professionalism, and ethics.
- Strong technology skills and understanding of GAAP; proficient with the MS suite of products.
- Ability to learn new software with little direction.
