Position Summary
A Pingry School Nurse provides direct nursing services that advance the health and well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of Pingry students. They facilitate positive student responses to growth and development, promote health and safety, intervene with health-related issues, provide case management services, and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning. All duties are performed under the policies and procedures within New Jersey School Health Service Guidelines and New Jersey State Registered Nurse Guidelines and Mandates. They must also be committed to driving DEIB within decision-making across the scope of the Nursing team. The Lower School School Nurse reports directly to the Director of Operations and partners closely with the Lower School Director. This is a 12-month full-time position.
Responsibilities
- Manages all administrative aspects of Pingry’s electronic medical records system, Magnus Health, including compiling data for statistical purposes, crafting communications, providing student rollover information, and troubleshooting.
- Responsible for the administration and record keeping of medication administration, inclusive of student specific controlled substances.
- Responsible for direct and indirect care given to students in compliance with confidentiality, school policies, professional standards of practice, physician’s orders, and the individual health plan.
- Assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and student referral activities.
- Serve as an intermediary between school personnel, parents/guardians, private physicians, and health agencies regarding students’ health needs.
- Manages daily care of health-related absences, chronic health needs, and medically complex and fragile cases.
- Advises parents when vaccines are needed.
- Responds and follow-ups to student and staff physical and mental health emergencies and accident reports during the academic day.
- Manages health-related emergency devices and medications, including AED, Naloxone, and Epinephrine, at the Short Hills Campus.
Health and Nutrition Education
- Collaborates with the Pingry Health Department to design, deliver, and teach developmentally appropriate learning experiences, classes, curriculum, and assemblies for K-5 students to advance health and wellness initiatives.
- Conducts faculty and staff CPR, AED, emergency procedures, Narcan, and OSHA blood-borne pathogen training.
- Partners with The Pingry School’s food service vendor and participates in reviewing the food service program and its effect on student-related health behavior and nutrition.
Program Coordination, Committee, and Collaboration Responsibilities
- Collaborates with Pingry School departments, agencies, and families to develop health service and promotional programs in support of the school’s strategic priorities.
- Serves as Coordinator for the Public Access Defibrillation Program and Flu Vaccination Program.
- Supports the following areas of the school: student support services, student safety, contact tracing, and health and safety.
- Collaborates with the School Physician, School Psychologist, and CAST (Counseling and Academic Support Team) on policies related to students’ physical, mental, and social-emotional health and wellness.
- Coordinates students' “Return to Learn” plans for sports injuries and concussions.
- Collaborates with the local, county, and state Department/Boards of Health and files reports on infectious diseases.
Qualifications
- Possession and Maintenance of Professional Registered Nurse Licensure for the State of New Jersey.
- Experience with the K-5 Elementary population preferred.
- Professional Registered Nurse Continuing Education Credits for Licensure.
- A Bachelor’s Degree based upon a four-year curriculum in an accredited college.
- Remains current with standards of practice and professional development.
- Minimum of three years of successful experience as a nurse or school nurse.
- Experience working with elementary and/or middle school-aged children and parents/guardians of this age group.
- Excellent organization, interpersonal communication (oral and written), and human relations skills with the ability to facilitate difficult conversations.
- Strong collaborative skills, demonstrating the ability to professionally support Pingry’s internal and external stakeholders, including students, employees, and families.
- Experience managing medications, tracking immunizations, adding treatment notes, and accessing student health information on an electronic medical records system.
- Experience using Magnus Health and Veracross is a bonus.
- Proficient Google “G Suite,” Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint user.
- Ability to design, lead, and implement change to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
- Evening and Weekend work may periodically occur.
