Job Description :
The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for an Investigative Analyst with the Cold Case Project in the Trial Division. In this position, the Investigative Analyst is responsible for providing highly skilled analytical investigative support to the Unit Chief, three designated Investigators, numerous NYPD Squad and Cold Case detectives, and other appointed homicide Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs). The Cold Case Investigative Analyst assists in reviewing unsolved homicide case files, some dating back to the 1960s, and investigating those that have the potential to result in arrest, prosecution, or other resolution. The Investigative Analyst also assists in an ongoing inventory project which requires exceptional organizational skills and an ability to create and maintain a record keeping system of hundreds of unsolved Manhattan homicides.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Works closely with DANY Investigators, NYPD, DANY Squad, Cold Case Squad, and Precinct Detective Squads, as well as other international, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, the Forensic Biology Unit, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
- Assists in reviewing homicide case files and writing in-depth investigative reports.
- Locates witnesses and possible suspects using government, public, and social media outlets.
- Locates physical and electronic evidence and preserves and arranges evidence for testing.
- Analyzes records with the goal of exploring new investigative opportunities.
- Corroborates the accuracy of information obtained.
- Coordinates and participates in witness interviews and maintains contact with individuals associated with each case.
- Briefs investigators, detectives, and ADAs on investigative searches.
- Assists with ongoing field investigations.
- Creates spreadsheets, charts, and other exhibits for investigative, Grand Jury, trial, and administrative use.
- Assists assigned homicide ADAs, investigators, and detectives with tasks relating to ongoing investigations.
- Maintains a database for all case files reviewed and tracks all investigation efforts for each case.
- Performs other administrative and paralegal duties as assigned.
In addition to the Minimum Qualification Requirements, all candidates possess the following:
- Level 1 – bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and one (1) year of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.
- Level 2 – bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.
- Level 3 – bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and three (3) years of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.
*Master’s degree can be substituted for years of experience. *
Preferred Requirements/Skills :
- Two (2) – four (4) years of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent based on the level.
- Computer proficiency required: Microsoft Office (specifically Excel).
- Advanced knowledge of criminal justice investigative internet search techniques and databases, including, but not limited to, CLEAR, Accurint, TLO, LEXIS, and eJustice.
- Proficiency in Internet search strategies and techniques, including preserving Facebook and other social media profiles.
- Superior organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments efficiently.
- Ability to think and perform in a highly stressful and fast-paced environment.
- Ability to communicate with witnesses, defense attorneys, financial institutions, regulators, law enforcement agencies, and all levels of staff.
- Ability to communicate investigative results to other team members and to testify in court regarding investigative results.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Excellent interpersonal, time management, writing, and communication skills. Must work well as part of a team.

- Current office employees: To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, staff must have already served at least 1 year in their current position and be in good standing. In addition, must meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
- Looking for candidates that could commit to one (1) year to the hiring unit.
- Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
- High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
