The OR RN will provide perioperative patient care, specifically outpatients during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the surgical experience according to established standards of care. Serves the populations ranging from infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepare and evaluate outpatients perioperatively in an efficient and caring manner to provide for a smooth patient flow throughout their experience. Collects, assesses, and analyzes patient data using nursing diagnoses to develop plan of care.
- Responsible for obtaining appropriate lab specimens. Maintains knowledge of equipment and stays abreast of current perioperative nursing trends.
- Review outpatient charts immediately preoperatively to ensure completeness, including completion of all preoperative consents.

Communicate effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, families and other health care team members.

Conduct assessments according to facility guidelines.

Prepares for surgical cases in an efficient manner, anticipating needs of patient, surgeon, anesthesia, and other surgical team members.

Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and psychological aspects of that environment.
- Circulates cases independently as assigned.

Provides airway management.

Ongoing physiological assessment through all phases of the surgical experience, including medication and pain management.
- Participates in the performance improvement process. Assists with regulatory compliance throughout the organization.
- Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications.

Adheres to all Joint Commission standards and CMS Rules and Regulations.
Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

R.N. with license to practice in State of Iowa.

OR nursing experience preferred.

Mandatory reporting course within previous 5 years.

Scrub tech abilities preferred but not required.

Maintains BCLS qualification.

Knowledge of perioperative services and patient education desired.
- Maintains ACLS qualification, or obtains within 6 months of hire.

Excellent documentation habits.
-
IV skill preferred.
