The Connecticut House Republican Office is seeking Legal Counsel to join its Legal/Research department and assist with daily operations. Full State of Connecticut fringe benefits package available.
Preferred Skills and Ability:
Ideal candidates are strong communicators, both written and verbally, detail oriented, and can quickly identify and summarize key policy issues. Must have the ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines, work well in a team environment, and demonstrate strong presentation skills. Experience with or interest in government/politics is preferred.
General Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include drafting legal opinions and advisories; advising legislators and staff on legal, legislative and policy issues; apprising legislators and staff of state ethics, elections/campaign finance and Freedom of Information laws; researching and briefing legislators on constitutional issues; analyzing pending legislation; working with legislative committee members to provide legal, research and policy assistance; producing legislation reflecting caucus priorities; drafting bills and amendments; conducting legal research; drafting legal opinions and advisories; and other daily duties working directly with state legislators.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
(Knowledge, skill and ability)
- Law degree from an accredited school.
- Good to excellent communication skills, written and oral.
- Excellent analytic and research abilities.
- Knowledge of general legal principles, terminology and practices and methods of legal research.
- Knowledge of standard English, including grammar, spelling, word usage and punctuation.
- Ability to be highly productive, prioritize assignments and meet deadlines under stressful conditions.
- Ability to act professionally, objectively and impartially in dealing with legislators and public.
- Ability to work objectively and impartially both with respect to members of both political parties and with respect to issues of state.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle politically sensitive work.
- Ability to use computers and adapt to changing technology.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
