Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced, passionate, Director of Accounting who is looking for the next challenge in their career. This role emphasizes aligning accounting practices with the company’s strategic objectives while providing robust leadership to the accounting team. We are looking for someone highly focused on fostering a culture of collaboration, humbly learning from and leading by example.
As the Director of Accounting (DA), you will be responsible for 2 distinct sets of responsibilities – one set is for our clients and one set is for our company. The DA role oversees operational accounting and financial reporting with timely and accurate execution of contracted deliverables for our clients, simultaneously driving process and developing systems to align the functions of the accounting department with company goals. This role requires a blend of strong leadership, accounting expertise, and strategic planning capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Accounting
- Oversee the accounting team day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and the general ledger.
- Supervise the maintenance of financial records on all company transactions and assets, including fixed and capital asset and depreciation records; general ledger, payroll entries, accounts payable, inventory, fixed asset management, etc. including data coming from other integrated systems, including cashflow management and report and supervision of deposits and other banking transactions and reconciliations.
- Participate in daily accounting operations, when necessary, though main focus is on transitioning to a strategic leadership role.
- Coordinate and support external audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance efforts, working closely with auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies as needed.
2. Financial Reporting:
- Manage and supervise month-end and year-end close processes, including the preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
- Prepare or supervise reports regarding operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and financial effectiveness of the organization.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements in all financial reporting and transactions.
- Provide internal reports for managers as requested.
3. Internal Controls:
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial data.
- Continuously work towards improvement on all financial work streams to eliminate rework, waste, and implement tools to drive efficiencies, and reduce defects/errors.
- Ensure the accuracy of financial data, regulatory compliance, and the implementation of internal controls.
- Supervise all compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by monitoring existing and new legislation, filing financial reports, and advising management on needed actions.
4. Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Coordinate the budgeting and forecasting process, working closely with other department leads to develop achievable financial targets for our clients.
- Revamp the budgeting and forecasting process and improve reporting systems.
5. Strategic Financial Management:
- Actively participate in aligning accounting functions with broader organizational goals.
- Optimize financial processes and systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Provide strategic financial planning and analysis, offering insights and recommendations to senior management.
6. Team Leadership:
- Supervise and lead the accounting team, providing guidance, training and coaching
- Foster a collaborative and productive environment while effectively providing performance feedback to ensure the professional growth, setting up annual goals and metrics.
7. Policy Development:
- Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures to enhance efficiency
- Develop, implement and adjust policies to support strategic goals
8. Process and Systems Development:
- Utilize advanced data analytics and reporting tools.
- Seek out resources needed to advance department goals aligned with company objectives.
- Collaborate with other departments to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and enhance cross-functional communication.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, developments, and best practices in hospitality finance and accounting, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation.
9. Stakeholder Communication:
- Act as a key point of contact between the accounting department and other departments, as well as external stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, setting clear expectations and maintaining professionalism.
Qualifications, Education, Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; advanced degrees (MBA) and certifications (CPA, CMA) preferred.
- At least 10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, including significant management responsibility preferably in the hospitality/restaurant industry.
- Experience leading and obtaining results through organizational change a must.
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP and experience with financial reporting.
- Proficiency with accounting software including data integrations, data analytics and business intelligence tools. M3 experience a plus.
- Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and communicate insights effectively to non-financial stakeholder

- Effective leadership and team management abilities, with a track record of building and developing a high-performing team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels of the organization.
- Experience working with multiple clients (hotel properties) preferred.
- Efficiently prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
