Candidates must be certified through the Massachusetts POST Commission and have attended the full-time Municipal Police Training Committee Academy (MPTC) or received a waiver from the MPTC.
All candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Have no less than 3-years’ progressive policing experience as a full-time Police Officer, preferably working in a municipal setting.
- Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates who have four years of full-time military service and an associate’s degree are also eligible and must be enrolled in an accredited four-year program at the time of appointment.
- Ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts firearms license.
- At least 21 years old on date of appointment.
- Must pass oral interviews.
- Must pass a thorough background investigation prior to employment.
- No person, who has been convicted of a felony or any offense punishable under M.G.L. Chapter 94C (drug law violations); or has been convicted of a misdemeanor and has been confined to any jail or house of correction as punishment for said crime, M.G.L. Chapter 22 C section 14, will be considered for employment.
- Must pass medical examination.
- Must pass psychological examination.
- Must be a United States citizen upon appointment.
- Must have a valid Massachusetts driver's license on date of appointment.
- Must reside within 15 miles of employing Town as determined by appointing authority.
- In accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 22 C section 10, no officer or student officer appointed or hired after January 1, 1988, shall smoke any tobacco product.
The current starting salary for FY’24 is $83,076.13, and after 6-month Probation period it is $85,204.18. Sergeants who have a college degree in criminal justice or a similar discipline will receive additional educational incentive pay (10% Associate’s, 20% Bachelor’s, 25% Master’s), holiday pay (108 hours of overtime pay), and shift differential (7% evening & midnight shift). The Town is in negotiations with the Union for the FY’25 to FY’27 bargaining agreement.
