The Coating & Welding Inspector is primarily responsible for conducting thorough inspections of coating applications to ensure compliance with industry standards and project specifications. This includes performing nondestructive testing and instrumentation on steel substrates to measure parameters such as film thickness, surface profile, and environmental conditions. The inspector meticulously documents all inspection findings and reports any deviations or issues. They play a crucial role in verifying that surface preparation and coating applications are conducted correctly, contributing to the prevention of corrosion. Additionally, they must adhere to safety protocols and ethical standards, maintaining clear communication with project teams and preparing detailed inspection reports to support quality assurance and control efforts.
Job Responsibilities:
§ Inspection Tasks: Perform basic coating inspections on steel substrates using nondestructive testing and instrumentation. Inspection of structural steel coatings, observation of containment, disposal of hazardous waste, surface preparation, coating application, and familiarity with all applicable local, state and federal guidelines.
§ Documentation: Accurately document inspection results (including photographic documentation), related to environmental conditions, surface preparation, coating application, and final inspection data.
§ Compliance: Ensure all work complies with relevant standards and specifications, such as those set by NACE/AMPP.
§ Safety and Ethics: Adhere to safety protocols and ethical standards in all inspection activities.
§ Reporting: Prepare and submit detailed inspection reports and maintain proper documentation.
Qualifications:
- Certification: NACE Level I certification and/or CWI certification is required.
- Knowledge Base: Understanding of corrosion processes, protective coatings, surface preparation methods, and coating application techniques.
- Skills: Proficient in using various inspection instruments and techniques for measuring film thickness, surface profile, and environmental conditions.
- Experience: Typically requires some experience in coatings or a related field, though entry-level candidates with certification may be considered.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and interacting with project teams.
Job Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- NACE Level 1 Certification or higher and/or CWI Certification preferred
- Valid driver’s license
- Vehicle and Current Insurance Requirements - State Requirements
- Working knowledge of MS Office Suite – Word, Excel, Outlook for communication/reporting to office staff from the field
- Ability to climb to a high elevation for inspections is mandatory
- Ability to walk long distances - potentially 1/2 mile to 1 mile per day
- Work in inclement weather
- SCHEDULE: Work non-standard hours/days, including some weekend or holiday work on occasion
