ABOUT THE FAMILY ENRICHMENT CENTER (FEC)
Supported by funding from the New York City Administration for Children Services (ACS) and the Division of Child and Family Well-Being (CFWB), the Family Enrichment Center (FEC) in Astoria will create a welcoming environment where community members can come together. The center offers a safe space for residents to connect, learn, and access essential resources for the betterment of families and individuals alike. Serving as a hub for support, FECs not only reflect the unique essenceof the neighborhood but also provide direct assistance and valuable resources. What makes FECsspecial is their focus on community involvement; families actively participate in shaping the centers'activities and initiatives. By fostering connections and empowering residents, the FEC willcontribute to the overall well-being and resilience of the Astoria community.
JOB SUMMARY
As the head of the FEC, the Director oversees its daily functions and directly manages two FamilyAdvocates and a Community Liaison. The ideal candidate embodies traits of openness, creativity,and flexibility, fostering genuine partnerships and servant leadership within the community, alongwith a steadfast dedication to social justice. The FEC Director ensures adherence to the center'smodel, serves as a liaison to ACS, and implements collaborative design approaches. Furthermore,they actively engage in citywide collaboratives and collaborate with ACS and other stakeholders touphold quality standards. Decision-making regarding the center is inclusive, involving communitymembers at every step.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the Family Enrichment Center (FEC), ensuring smooth functioning and efficient delivery of services.
- Oversee a team of Community Liaisons and Family Advocates to establish partnerships with community organizations, facilitate outreach efforts, and involve participants in quality assurance and enhancement initiatives.
- Engage community members through virtual and in-person meetings to identify those interested in participating in the FEC, and facilitate discussions on community needs, assets, and strengths to shape the FEC's vision and programs.
- Oversee the budget of the FEC in collaboration with your supervisor and FEC Advisory Council/Board and handle the recruitment, training, and coaching of FEC staff/team members.
- Serve as a liaison to the ACS, facilitating communication and collaboration and review progress and ensure compliance with all contractual obligations.
- Establish and empower an Advisory Council/Board composed of FEC members to shape the strategic direction of the FEC and contribute to key management decisions.
- Represent the FEC by engaging in outreach at community events and venues, participating in public forums such as community board meetings, and liaising with public officials to advocate for the needs of the FEC community and promote awareness of the FEC's mission and initiatives.
- Foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration among staff, Advisory Council/Board members, and FEC members, emphasizing equity, inclusivity, and decentralized decision-making.
- Implement collaborative design approaches involving community members in FEC’s decision-making processes and program development that enhance one or more of the seven family protective factors.
- Actively engage in citywide collaboratives and partnerships, representing the FEC and contributing to collective efforts to enhance services and support for families.
- Additional related duties as assigned.
STATEMENT OF SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Bilingual (English and Spanish, Mandarin, or Bengali)
- Master’s Degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a high school diploma/GED and at least 7 years of relevant experience.
- Relevant experience includes leadership/managerial roles in a community based or social service organization.
- At least 3 years of experience working with children and families.
- Resident of Astoria/ Western Queens preferred.
- Knowledge and commitment to the Astoria/Western Queens community.
- Experience in managerial and/or leadership roles in community-driven service.
- Knowledge of one or more of the FEC frameworks (equity, co-design, Appreciative Inquiry, Family Protective Factors) or other frameworks/approaches with similar components a plus.
- Proficient in effective management within collaborative team settings, including budget outcome monitoring.
- Committed to implementing strategies that advance cultural competency, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Foster genuine partnerships and servant leadership within the community by embodying traits of openness, creativity, and flexibility.
- Demonstrate unwavering commitment to social justice principles in all interactions within the community.
