Job Summary: Responsible for the direction of patient care in the pediatric medical setting. Manages clinical staff members in the PPEC. Consults with staff, and physicians on nursing problems and interpretation of facility policies to ensure patient and family needs are met. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in QA Meetings.
Responsible for the direction of the nursing staff.
Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all pediatric patients and reassessments as per policy.
Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for pediatric patients.
Coordinates the directs patient care to ensure patients’ and family needs are met and facility policy is followed.
Demonstrates knowledge of pediatric milestones. Able to detect deviations from the anticipated milestones and report same to physician.
Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the pediatric patient and their clinical condition.
Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs of the patient and family and evaluates effectiveness of learning.
Educates the patient's family regarding the patient's illness. Encourages families to participate in the child's care and teaches the child self-care when appropriate.
Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level licensure.
Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the pediatric patient.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Ensures and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
Consults other departments as appropriate to provide and collaborate in patient care performance improvement activities.
Demonstrates an ability to perform services requiring technical and manual skills.
Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, and administrative team.
Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of the patients and families. Functions as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
Documentation meets current standards and policies.
Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with Social Service regarding patient needs.
Maintains performance improvement activities for the department.
Provides education to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientation and inservice training for the unit staff members. Participates in guidance and educational programs.
Maintains records pertinent to staff and operation of the unit. Prepares reports, i.e., utilization, performance improvement, outcome data.
Participates in patient care conferences.
Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Resolves staff concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control. Appointed as the Infection Control Officer.
Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.
Experince Requirements:
- Hold a current Florida Registered nurse license
- Hold a current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Have a minimum of two (2) years general pediatric nursing experience of which at least six (6) months must have been spent caring for medically fragile infants or children in a pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, PPEC, or similar care setting during the previous five (5) years.
