SUMMARY: To provide all students with a physical learning environment that is safe, clean, healthy, attractive, pleasant and smoothly functioning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)
- Recommends the recruitment, employment, assignment, transfer, promotion, demotion or dismissal of buildings and grounds personnel.
- Responsible for planning and scheduling of maintenance and repair requirements of the school system; organizes and implements a program of preventive maintenance for all schools.
- Schedules and supervises work routines for buildings and grounds personnel.
- Maintains a coordinated inventory control program for all buildings and grounds supplies and equipment.
- Supervises the maintenance and distribution of supplies and equipment for the entire school department through Central Receiving.
- Maintains necessary liaison with the Central Office with respect to personnel records and payroll procedures.
- Establishes appropriate maintenance, groundskeeping, security and custodial requirements for all school properties.
- Selects and makes requisitions for necessary equipment and supplies, drafting bid specifications and evaluating bid submissions as appropriate.
- Inspects all school buildings, grounds and installations on a regular basis to determine that high standards of workmanship, cleanliness, safety, and security are maintained.
- Coordinates grounds maintenance and building use needs with the City Parks and Recreation Department.
- Ensures that all standards relating to safety and to protection of life and property are maintained in accordance with law and Board of Education policy.
- Responsible for planning of ADA compliance for all school buildings.
- Engages outside contractors for school maintenance projects, and verifies that the terms of such contracts have been fulfilled before authorizing payment.
- Prepares and administers the Buildings and Grounds budget, works with building administrators and foremen to be sure that all facility needs are identified.
- Arranges for and ensures that all Buildings and Grounds staff participate in all required trainings.
- Keeps informed of the latest trends, developments, and products for the maintenance, repair and upkeep of all school buildings; encourages innovation, experimentation and energy efficiency efforts, as appropriate.
- Establishes procedures and methods for testing and evaluating new supplies and equipment.
- Works with foremen and building administrators to ensure timely performance evaluation of all staff.
- Oversees the repair, lubrication and cleaning of boiler equipment.
- Works with the Central Office and Board of Education sub-committee on Buildings and Grounds to establish work plans and respond to questions about maintenance status.
- Participates on system-wide facilities committees to identify needs and plan for future facility improvement.
- Performs such other duties and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: All custodial, maintenance and warehouse personnel
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated knowledge of the basic principles of construction, maintenance and security.
- At least three years of experience in a supervisory capacity in either business, industry, or a governmental agency.
- At least three years of experience in the area of planning and maintaining physical facilities.
- Experience as a facility manager in an educational facility will be given preference.
