JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the foreman and Trimmer Operator, employee is responsible to acquire and develop the necessary skills to perform the established operating procedures in the bindery, in particular, the proper packing of bound or bundled magazines from the binder conveyor to skids or into boxes for shipment.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fulfill all packing responsibilities according to job requirements.
- Check all load flags to establish the layer count per skid. Check the bundle layout diagram located on the clipboard at each packing area, to determine bundle layout on skid.
- Pull empty skid from pile and place on floor beside work area. Depending on how high the pile of skids is at the time, this can involve reaching over shoulder height and carrying a 30 pound skid to the work area, then placing it on the floor. The maximum height of the pile is 8 feet. The minimum height is 6 inches. This aspect of the job can be performed with assistance.
- Check/inspect bundles coming out of shrink oven to assure proper number of books is in each bundle.
- Inspect all bundles for defects and damage to books.
- If books are delivered as single copies, inspect each single book, looking for whether the print is square on the backbone, any bad cuts, loose packages, etc. At start of each job run, inspect the 1st several books for proper pagination, and page layout; and then inspect for same periodically throughout the run.
- Pack bundles or loose single books on skid in proper stacking pattern until proper amount of bundles or loose magazines are on skid.
- Sign your name to load flag, place load flag on top row of bundles, facing out, for easy identification.
- Call floor person to remove skid to staging area.
- Perform cleanup and general departmental housekeeping.
- Follow Company safety practices and procedures to provide a safe & clean work environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Position requires ability to read, write, count, and follow both written and verbal instructions.
- Position requires ability to stand constantly and for extended periods (8 hour shifts), body mobility, the use of both hands, good vision, and good hand/eye coordination.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Position requires extensive/constant standing and walking; extensive lifting up to 10 pounds approximately 3 to 5 times per minute; occasional lifting of up to 35 pounds to retrieve a new skid; extensive grasping of books; frequent bending and reaching; occasional climbing, stooping, pulling, pushing, and kneeling. Degree and frequency of bending varies during the shift.
- When skids (pallets) are empty and starting to be packed, bending is frequent, and can be up to a 90 degree bend. As the skid gets loaded, the need to bend diminishes since the books are then being moved from a waist height conveyor to waist or higher packed skid.
- Employee will be exposed to noise, vibration, and contact with dust, grease, oils, paper, plastic stretch wrap, cardboard boxes, and wooden pallets.
- Generally 3-4 weeks to become proficient in most areas of the job.
