Overview
- Under general direction, performs analytical testing of air, water, soil, and biosolids at the MSD lab;
- Coordinates sampling and testing work;
Assists with compliance activities such as the laboratory quality control and quality assurance programs.

Essential Functions:
- Performs a variety of regular and special inorganic, organic and biological tests in order to characterize samples of raw and treated wastewater, sludge, etc., such as biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, heavy metal analyses, suspended solids, phosphorus, ammonia, grease, nitrogen, etc.
- Assists the Chemist in performing special tests using advanced analytical instrumentation, such as gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, ion chromatograph, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer
- Calibrates instruments
- Prepares standards and reagents according to specific and detailed procedures and quality control criteria
- Notifies Chemist of unusual conditions or test results
- Assists in ordering laboratory supplies
- Prepares bottles and sampling kits for field use
- Maintains laboratory equipment
- Utilizes a laboratory information management system to record, transmit and document test results
- Develops and/or updates standard operating procedures that comply with federal/state regulations and industry standard methods
- Evaluates test results for conformance with accepted procedures
- Maintains records of tests performed and prepares reports
Additional Responsibilities:
- Performs routine cleaning of laboratory benches and equipment
- Assists with special projects
- Performs related work as required or as delegated by supervisor

Qualifications
Training and Experience:

Bachelor's degree with major course work in Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science OR
- Associate's degree with major course work in Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science, AND two (2) years' experience in water or wastewater laboratory analysis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which the employee resides.
Pursuant to MSD's "Substance Abuse Policy and Procedures," this position has been designated as safety sensitive and candidate must pass a Non-D.O.T. Drug Test for this position. Employees occupying this position are not subject to Federal (D.O.T.) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.
Employees of MSD must have a "Meets Expectations" on their current performance review.
