Overview:
The outpatient dietitian provides nutrition services to individuals in an outpatient setting for nutrition-related problems, preventive health measures and chronic disease management. Assesses nutritional needs, develops and implements nutritional care plans, and evaluates and reports these results appropriately. Maintains professional competency and skills required for professional practice. Successfully markets the Nutrition Centre to physicians, patients, and other community members.

Responsibilities:

Assesses nutrition status of patient and based on this evaluation, plans, implements and evaluates appropriate cost-effective nutrition care of clients.

Provides nutrition education counseling utilizing techniques that consider the varied needs of age-specific populations as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic concerns.

Maintains ongoing communication with the patient’s referring physician and other health care providers to ensure continuity of care.

Maintains a high level of competence while applying current research information and methods into nutrition care of clients.

Develops and implements an individualized plan for nutrition intervention in accordance with the patient’s medical program goals and objectives, nutrition prescription, and self-management training. Assists patients in developing realistic, long term health goals and goal-directed behaviors.

Identifies opportunities to increase patient, physician, and community awareness of outpatient nutrition services.

Participates in the orientation and training of new dietitians, as necessary.

Assists in the education of dietetic students and interns as requested.

Prepares and delivers community nutrition education programs as assigned.

Maintains accurate record keeping of appointments for scheduling and billing.

Provides appropriate documentation that summarizes the nutrition care plan in the patient’s medical record.

Assists in developing and revising patient education materials, forms, and protocols.

Participates in planning and developing nutrition-related policies, procedures, and goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Foods, Human Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Service Management or Institution Management from a four-year college or university.

Successful completion of a post-graduate or equivalent dietetic program that fulfills requirements for registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Experience with public speaking

One year experience as a clinical dietitian desirable.

Experience as an outpatient dietitian highly desirable.
