Job Title: Laboratory Technician - Blood Bank
The Laboratory Technician - Blood Bank is responsible for performing blood bank laboratory tests, ensuring the safe and effective collection, processing, and transfusion of blood products. This role requires technical expertise in blood bank procedures, attention to detail, and adherence to quality control and safety standards. The technician works collaboratively with healthcare professionals to provide critical blood products for patient care.
- Blood Bank Testing:
- Perform blood bank tests including blood typing, crossmatching, antibody screening, and compatibility testing.
- Prepare blood products for transfusion, including the separation of blood components and labeling.
- Conduct serological tests for blood donations and process donor blood.
- Quality Control and Compliance:
- Adhere to established protocols for blood collection, processing, and storage.
- Perform routine quality control tests to ensure accuracy and reliability of blood bank procedures.
- Follow regulatory guidelines and maintain compliance with AABB, FDA, and CAP standards.
- Specimen Management:
- Collect and manage blood specimens from donors and patients.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and documentation of blood products and patient information.
- Data Management:
- Enter and verify test results and blood product data into electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Maintain accurate records of blood bank activities, including inventory and test results.
- Safety and Sanitation:
- Follow safety protocols for handling blood and biohazardous materials.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including the cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment.
- Communication and Support:
- Communicate test results, procedures, and issues with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff.
- Provide technical support and answer questions related to blood bank procedures and blood products.
- Professional Development:
- Engage in continuing education and professional development to stay current with advancements in blood banking technology and procedures.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and contribute to ongoing learning opportunities.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a blood bank or transfusion services laboratory preferred.
- Education: Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Certifications:
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT) from ASCP or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Skills:
- Technical Proficiency: Expertise in blood bank procedures, blood typing, crossmatching, and blood product preparation.
- Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in performing tests and processing blood products.
- Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills.
