We are seeking a compassionate and caring Kennel Attendant to join our team. This role is essential to the well-being of the dogs in the humane society, and you will play a critical role in ensuring their health and well-being. Primary Duties:
- Feed dogs, wash dishes, and clean all kennels daily
- After proper training and time in position walking and exercising dogs daily
Specific Duties:
- Remove all soiled linens and toys daily, shaking excess debris off before placing in the laundry basket. Take soiled linens to laundry area after cleaning, daily
- Empty and refill water buckets, hang Kuranda beds, empty food bowls, dump all left over food and treats in garbage receptacle
- Scoop feces and sweep debris from kennel floor and drains
- Soak all food and water bowls, daily, for 15 minutes or more (not all day or overnight). Scrub all food and water bowls. Rinse and dry
- Spray disinfectant on walls, door, floor, bed, and fence of each kennel.
- Move portable items to sweep and spray entire area. Use a squeegee to remove excess water and debris
- Take trash to the dumpster and place clean garbage bags in all receptacles
- Put appropriately sized in relation to the dog Kuranda bed in place, replace linens if necessary, and place treats according to each dog’s diet restrictions
- Provide an appropriate amount of food daily as directed by the Kennel Manager
- Provide treats and toys for enrichment as directed by Kennel Manager
- Keep food prep room clean and organized
- Maintain all latches and chains on every dog kennel, making certain that they are latched
- Soak cleaning equipment (scoops, shovels, etc.) in fresh disinfectant solution
- Maintain feeding board daily
- Assist in dog enrichment and play groups as instructed by the Kennel Manager
- Report any safety concerns with kennel or dog to Kennel Manager
- Stock with soft/hard food, toys, treats, cleaning supplies and clean linens during designated stocking times
- Assist in moving donations from front of the building and donation room to Falconi
- Clean all drains, removing debris, to keep water flowing freely daily
- Alert a Vet Staff and Kennel Manager of any vomiting, diarrhea or ill-appearing dogs
- Assist Vet Tech staff on restraining dogs when needed
- Assist potential adopters in finding a dog/puppy that meets their needs and environment
- Maintain clean play areas, scooping feces, disinfecting, removing trash and damaged toys. Keep clean water in place, weather permitting
- Be knowledgeable regarding promotions and able to explain to customers
- Be knowledgeable of the dogs/puppies available for adoption, including but not limited to special needs, diets, etc
- Report any concerns with potential adopter to the Kennel Manager or Animal Wellness Manager for assistance
- Assist volunteers when needed with information on dogs and putting harnesses on dogs
- Assist in bringing in donations and organizing appropriately in food storage room
- Assist with cleaning kennel windows, drains, air return grates, and other areas in kennel
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years old and have reliable transportation to work
- Job contingent on background check, drug testing and reference checks
- Minimum High School diploma or GED required
- Previous kennel and dog experience a plus
- Able to work holidays and weekends
- Must have compassion for animals
- Ability to diplomatically interact with diverse people
- Ability to work independently as well as take direction
- Ability to diplomatically interact with diverse people.
- Dependability and punctuality are a key requirement of the job.
- Willingness to attend educational and training programs as deemed necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Be able to handle the physical demands of the job to accomplish requirements of the job, which includes being able to lift 50 pounds frequently
- The ability to stand up to 6 hours daily
- Frequently will need to crouch, kneel, and bend while picking up after, cleaning and handling dogs
- Constant use of hands to leash up dogs, handle hose to clean, push brush to clean, lift debris, and bathing animals
- Constantly will be moving from one duty to the next
- Ability to hear animals in distress and smell unusual smells in kennel spaces
- Ability to work frequently in a loud kennel environment
- Exposure to cleaning agents, peanut butter, and other potential allergens
- Exposure to rain, heat, and other weather while walking dogs and cleaning outside kennels.
