POSITION OVERVIEW: Hudson Guild’s Mental Health Counseling Program is a small, community focused mental health program committed to providing high quality, comprehensive mental health care to individuals across the lifespan. The Medical Biller is an integral part of the mental health team, responsible for ensuring that mental health services are billed accurately and efficiently. This role involves preparing and submitting billing to our fiscal department, following up on unpaid claims, addressing any billing issues that may arise and verifying participants' insurance. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of medical billing and coding, particularly in the mental health field and will work closely with the program’s leadership team to ensure the financial health of the practice. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and critical thinking skills required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in a related field, a Medical Billing Certificate (CPB, CMRS) or several years of work. experience with medical billing or bookkeeping required.
- Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and Medicaid Managed Care, the insurance billing process, coding systems (CPT, ICD-10) and clinical terminology
- Ability to work independently and familiarity with Microsoft Office/Excel and Google Docs
- Familiarity with Electronic Healthcare Records
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal abilities
- Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and ethically
- Ability to make sliding-scale, self-pay determinations for uninsured clients
- Ability to generate invoices for self-payments and manage payments using a secure tracking system
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of AWARDS or similar Electronic Health Record System
- Experience with OMH Regulations
- Experience working within a mental health program
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Verify client insurance coverage and benefits for mental health services
- Communicate with insurance companies to resolve discrepancies and obtain necessary authorizations
- Prepare and send clients statements for services rendered
- Address client inquiries and resolve billing issues promptly
- Obtain client information from mental health service providers; enter data into automated online billing systems to allow for appropriate billing of Medicaid, Medicare, Managed Care and other 3rd party insurers and self-pay clients.
- Monitor claims and reconcile payments, denials and pending claims.
- Apply transmittal data against billed visits, research denials and re-transmit/submit.
- Maintain ongoing dialogue
- with clinical team on insurance eligibility of clients/client’s status and information; prepare reports for the Director of Mental Health Services and Executive Team as requested
- Work collaboratively with program leadership and agency finance team (BTQ)
- Be responsible for and coordinate all personal contacts with payers and follow up on billing problems and payments
- Other related duties as assigned.
