The Maternal Fetal Medicine Coder is responsible for accurately assigning medical codes to services provided in the field of maternal-fetal medicine. This role involves reviewing patient records, documentation, and clinical information to ensure proper coding for procedures, consultations, and diagnostic tests related to high-risk pregnancies and fetal complications. The coder must have a deep understanding of maternal-fetal medicine billing as consultants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level codes for services rendered in maternal-fetal medicine.
- Review medical records to ensure accuracy and completeness of coding.
- Collaborate with Medical Director to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.
- Stay updated on coding changes, regulations, and compliance requirements in maternal-fetal medicine.
- Work closely with billing and reimbursement teams to facilitate accurate claims submission.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Participate in coding audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required.
- Previous experience in obstetrics and gynecology coding, preferably in maternal-fetal medicine.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes related to pregnancy complications.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software, eCW experience is highly desirable.
- Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to work independently.
- Understanding SMFM guidelines, updates, and changes.
- Capability of identifying coding errors and coding denial trends.
Physical Demands:
Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods of time. Some bending and lifting required. Requires manual dexterity to operate keyboard, calculator, copier, printer and other office equipment. Requires normal vision and normal hearing. May require the ability to deal with stressful situations.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in health information management or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in medical coding, with a focus on maternal-fetal medicine coding preferred.
