POSITION: Assistant Police Chief/Senior Officer in Charge
SUMMARY: The Assistant Chief of Police/Senior Officer in Charge implements the College’s security policies and procedures and maintains peace, order, safety, and security for students, faculty, staff, and the public. This position safeguards the College’s physical facilities, grounds, and property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal activities. This position supervises one FT and 4-6 PT security officers. This position works a 4pm – Midnight shift Monday - Friday. This position must be held by a current APOSTC-certified police officer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of a high school diploma or GED Certificate is required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of employment experience as a police officer.
- APOST minimum Standards Certificate or ability to achieve a lateral transfer from APOST.
- Valid Alabama driver’s license.
- Must be insurable by the College’s insurance carrier.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Employment experience as a police officer in a college setting.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of law enforcement methods, security methods, and traffic control procedures.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral, using PC, telephone and other media.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
- Ability to effectively supervise personnel.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.
- Some overnight travel may be required.
- Ability to travel independently.
- Ability to work with large groups.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, or run for extended period of time.
- Ability to lift, move or transport independently at least up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and manage complicated tasks.
- Ability to meet other physical demands to comparable professional position in the public or private sector.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
In addition to adhering to general policies and guidelines specified by the ACCS Board of Trustees and the MMI Faculty/Staff Handbook, the successful candidate will also perform the following duties:
- Provides campus security, law enforcement protection, and assists in civil defense preparedness.
- Provides instructional support to MMI’s First Responder Program
- Supervises and schedules security officers to ensure coverage after hours and on weekends and holidays.
- Provides foot and vehicular patrol of campus.
- Safeguards students, faculty, staff, authorized campus visitors, college property, buildings, and equipment.
- Responds to and investigates all incidents on campus including but not limited to criminal, security and safety, and college violations.
- Keeps administration updated on situations and developments involving the safety and security of college locations.
- Locks and unlocks offices and buildings daily.
- Monitors authorized student activities and other events on campus to ensure security, safety, and adherence to College policies.
- Prepares accidents and incident/offense reports.
- Manages college parking enforcement program.
- Assists in coordinating drills and exercises, including evacuation and lockdown drills in every building during every twenty-four-month cycle.
- Assists in providing training to faculty and staff concerning indicators of potentially problematic behaviors so that positive behavioral interventions can allow the at-risk individuals to thrive.
- Assists in coordinating training for college personnel on matters of safety and security.
- Assists in the development of plans and procedures for campus security, emergency response, and other related matters.
- Must be willing to work on campus/instructional site and on all shifts based on the needs of the college.
- Comply with policies of the Alabama Community College System and Marion Military Institute.
- Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
SALARY: Salary Schedule C3 01 ($56,656 - $69,517), based on relevant education and experience.
PROJECTED START DATE: ASAP.
