Gelest, Inc., located in Glen Rock PA, is currently seeking an Environmental Technician.
Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Environmental Technician is the management of hazardous waste. Thisincludes the transport to and from points of generation, proper storage, and preparation and packaging for proper disposal of chemical and hazardous waste materials. In addition, the Environmental Technician monitors waste collection, waste storage and waste segregation of materials as per Federal, State & Local regulations.
Summary of Essential Tasks:
- Collecting hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals for waste disposal, including performing chemical transfer to storage containers for consolidation as needed.
- Collecting, tracking, and reporting environmental data.
- Coordinating and working with contractors to monitor waste volumes, manage manifests, track waste, and schedule pick-ups.
- Assisting in recognizing and generating new waste profiles as necessary.
- Assigning new waste streams for characterization, packaging, and preparation for transport.
- Conducting inspections, inventory, general housekeeping, and maintenance of waste accumulation and storage areas and associated equipment.
- Inventorying, inspecting, and maintaining supplies of emergency spill response equipment.
- Participating in spill clean-up.
- Participating in environmental compliance inspections, including conducting and documenting spill prevention control and countermeasure plan, and stormwater permit requirements.
- Ensuring corrective actions related to identified inspection deficiencies are completed and documented.
- Collecting stormwater samples and ensuring stormwater permit required best management practices (BMPs) are implemented at the facility.
- Ability to load packaged, prepared, and properly labeled waste onto approved truck/tractor trailer.
- Complete waste analysis sampling by handling quarantined materials dispositioned for waste disposal.
- Performing inspections, general housekeeping and maintaining or initiating repairs to SCBA units, chemical fume hoods, waste pad and other EHS equipment.
- Developing and conducting appropriate training materials related to non-hazardous and hazardous waste management.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree from four-year college or university in chemistry, environmental science or related science preferred, or relevant experience.
- Completion of RCRA Hazardous Waste Management training, US DOT Hazardous Material Shipping and/or HAZWOPER training a plus

- Computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Mathematical skills, including ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to effectively plan and organize, prioritize and plan work activities, and develop work flow procedures.
- Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, developing alternative solutions
- Ability to react professionally under pressure and to treat others with respect and consideration.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals and adapt to frequent changes, delays, or other unexpected events.
- Ability to observe safety and security procedures and report potentially unsafe conditions.
