Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing all accounting functions which include preparing monthly financials, preparation of annual budget, monthly close, grant management and reporting and related data management functions. This includes making sure all accounts are reconcile, AR/AP management, workers comp administration; tax and audit preparation, contract and budget management, tracking, and forecasting; and all critical fiscal management responsibilities. The Senior Accountant will adhere to and seek to improve existing internal controls while complying with and staying abreast of GAAP.
Scope of Work
- Accounting Operations: Serve as lead on all aspects of accounting operations including accounts receivable/payable, payroll, retirement plan, bank accounts/reconciliations and the management of financial controls in accordance with GAAP. Accuracy of organizations General Ledger. Maintenance and improvement of chart of accounts. Production of high-level financials for Board of Directors and program/department Directors.
- Policy and Procedures: Help the team develop and maintain efficient and effective accounting and financial management infrastructure including policies, processes, procedures and internal controls.
- Budgeting: Work with the team to develop organizational, program and grant budgets.
- Compliance and Audit: Lead and ensure timely and annual audits and 990 reports by adhering to organizational accounting policies and procedures throughout the year and by providing the CPA firm with the required reports and backup.
- Operations Support: Assist internal teams to manage various requirements such as grant audits, department budgets, credit cards and other accounting functions. Creation, in collaboration with Leadership Team, of annual budget.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and at least 5 years of accounting experience required in a senior roll.
- Preference for candidates with non-profit accounting experience, appropriate knowledge of tax laws and related issues and regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations, including federal and state filings and sound internal controls.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Has experience managing the budget and financial processes of a company and/or non-profit organization.
- Understands revenue and expenses allocations and can track those allocations against dynamic budgets.
- Creates contract and budgeting forecasting models and can present those models in an easy to understand manner.
- Has an eye towards improvement-identifies needs and creates for driving improvement.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Good Written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
- Ability to produce high quality work and exercise good judgment.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and in teams.
- Experience with Payroll Systems is a plus.
- Demonstrated Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and Word.
- Prior experience in a non-profit environment is a plus.
- Knowledge of federal government guidelines is a plus.
Work Schedule:
- The Senior Accountant will report to the CFO and work closely with team members at all levels of the organization.
- Monday – Friday in Office
