OVERVIEW
Franciscan Children's seeks a highly experienced and motivated individual to join our team as the Vice President of Mission and Ethics. The VPME is responsible for ensuring that the mission, vision, and values of Catholic health ministry and the ecclesiastical sponsor, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, are integrated into Franciscan Children’s operations, strategy, and decision-making. The VPME works as a member of the hospital’s senior leadership to maintain the Hospital’s Catholic identity while also promoting a culture that is open and welcoming to people from all religions and faiths. Ensures organizational alignment with the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides direction and guidance on matters related to Catholic and Franciscan formation, orientation and education to board members, medical staff, and other senior leaders to promote Catholic identity and Catholic healthcare ministry.
- Orients new hires to the mission, vision, ethics and values of Catholic health ministry and the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
- Monitors organizational alignment with the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services and reports findings to senior hospital leadership and the Hospital’s ecclesial sponsor for mission.
- Assists in implementation of spiritual life/pastoral care strategy for the Hospital including supporting the Catholic and non-Catholic chaplains.
- Participate as a member of the Hospital’s ethics/bioethics committee, and coordination with the Hospital’s sister hospital, Boston Children’s, ethics committee.
- Maintains relationship with the local Catholic parishes and religious orders as well as other congregations and faith traditions to improve the health and well-being of communities served by Franciscan Children’s.
- Maintains relationship with local Catholic priests to ensure access to the Blessed Sacrament for staff and patients at Hospital.
- Presents an annual report on mission, ethics and formation to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary or their delegate and when required, to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston
- Arrange for an external assessment of FCH’s maintenance of Catholic identity to be conducted every three years by the Catholic Health Association.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree required, master’s degree preferred, in one or more of the following:
- Health care ethics/bioethics, and courses in Catholic theology,
- Theology/theological ethics with a concentration in health care ethics/bioethics,
- Philosophical ethics with a concentration in health care ethics/bioethics, and courses in Catholic theology.
7 years of demonstrated leadership in a Catholic health care organization, experience with ethics committees and clinicians, and with ethics consultations.
