Position Summary
The Fitness Coordinator will provide leadership, vision and supervision for a comprehensive fitness program that includes group fitness classes, personal training and health promotion/wellbeing initiatives. This position provides significant teaching and training of students and oversees administration of group fitness, personal training, and other fitness and wellbeing programs. The position reports to the Associate Director of Programs and Initiatives and collaborates closely with all other Campus Rec (CREC) professional staff. This position also plays an integral role in Campus Rec’s strategic plan and student success while serving as an active member of the Portland State Community, serving on committees and attending events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience or Master’s Degree and one year of professional experience; professional experience to come from the administration of fitness programs (GA can count for one year).
- Possess and maintain a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer certification from a nationally-recognized organization such as ACSM, ACE and NASM.
- Prior experience teaching group fitness classes and/or personal training clients.
- Possess and maintain American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR/FA/AED or obtain one within four weeks of start date.
- Ability to work varied hours including evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrated experience working in and creating an inclusive and culturally respectful environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently as well as cooperatively within established and ad hoc teams.
- A self-starter able to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines, and have exceptional attention to detail.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, physical/health education, recreation, student services, or related field.
- 2+ years of experience with fitness programs and health promotion or wellbeing in a university setting.
- Demonstrated ability to train individuals to teach group fitness classes and be personal trainers.
- Previous experience in training, supervising and leading a cohesive team.
- Experience providing programs and services to students from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Demonstrates experience with, passion for, and commitment to the Campus Rec mission and values.
- Volunteer Engagement with NIRSA or similar fitness organizations.

Work Days/Hours
Monday - Friday generally 8 - 5 with occasional evening and weekend hours
Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be between $54,684 – $60,000 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
An excellent benefits package includes 95% employer-paid health insurance premiums (employees and eligible dependents) and significantly reduced tuition rates for employees and eligible dependents at any of the Oregon Public Universities. After completing six full months employees are eligible to choose between our two employer-paid pension programs in addition to two voluntary retirement programs.
