The Woodstock Foundation is seeking highly qualified candidates for the full-time position of Assistant Farm Manager for Billings Farm & Museum (BF&M) in Woodstock, Vermont. BF&M was established in 1983 and is a primary ongoing project of the Foundation. The farm currently milks 45 registered Jersey cows, has a developing draft animal program, small flock of sheep, goats, and laying hens with seasonally raised pigs and turkeys. The Assistant Farm Manager performs the day-to-day work of the Billings Farm, which is a working dairy farm and part of the Billings Farm & Museum. The role of this position assists the Farm Manager and oversees the farm operation in the absence of the Farm Manager. This position has a focus on herd and dairy management, working with the Farm Manager and staff to determine the best practices for future farm goals.
The Billings Farm is looking for a candidate with five (5) years of farming and leadership experience in a grass-based forage system. The farm is transitioning from a once conventional dairy operation to a rotationally grazed system for all livestock. As the farm enters a new era of progressive farming, we're seeking the right person to help create more of an agricultural experimentation model of excellence.
abilities:
Knowledge of and experience in current agricultural practices; 5 plus year's experience managing a dairy farm, a strong focus on land stewardship, sustainability, and rotational grazing required. In addition, a working knowledge of hay making, fencing, basic equipment repair/upkeep and safe equipment operation, is preferred.
Positive attitude and willingness to participate in daily milking. Ability to milk independently preferred. Strong organizational skills needed.
Ability to interact with the public in a responsible and courteous manner and proven ability to cooperate with others, showing leadership in creating a positive work environment.
Knowledge and experience with dairy herd breeding records, vet protocols, recording of medical data in PCdart. Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development.
Ability to follow instructions, maintain priorities, and complete work in a neat and orderly fashion while motivating and leading others to do the same.
Ability to perform AI breeding a plus.
duties:
Supervise the farm in the absence of the Farm Manager, participating in and directing the day-to-day work of the farm, its staff and making decisions involving the health and wellbeing of the livestock, crops, and equipment.
Perform the daily chores and duties involved in all aspects of the agricultural operations, following all Billings Farm protocols. Much of the work at the farm requires heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs), strenuous work conditions, irregular schedules depending on season and staffing.
Provide continuity of farm management on days when the Farm Manager is off. Has authority to treat sick animals in accordance with Billings Farm protocols and will inform farm and museum staff of issues, as appropriate.
Participate in special events and school programs that portray various aspects of the agricultural practices of Billings Farm. This includes weekends and holidays.
Perform all duties responsibly, conscientiously, and safely representing Billings Farm & Museum professionally in all public contacts.
Perform other duties, as assigned.
This position includes housing on property which requires on-call and evening hours.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
