Island Health is seeking several Medical Health Officers (MHO) to join our expanding public health team.
These roles provide an exciting opportunity to lead and practice public health, shaping policies, programs, and services to enhance health and reduce inequities for a diverse population of 916,000. Whether your focus is on urban, rural, or remote population health issues, or providing region-wide leadership in areas such as health assessment, communicable disease control, environmental health, public policy, mental health promotion, substance use, Indigenous health, or injury prevention, Island Health offers a platform to advance your career, mentor residents, and engage in research.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide medical leadership for public health services and programs
- Conduct population health assessments and engage with the community in assigned geographic areas
- Enforce public health legislation within designated areas and occasionally other regions within Island Health
- Collaborate with Indigenous communities to advance the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action
- Support the Vision, Purpose, Values, and strategic direction of Island Health, the Ministry of Health’s Guiding Framework for Public Health, the Public Health Act, and other relevant legislation
Qualifications:
- Medical Doctor and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health and Preventive Medicine
- Medical License from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia
Skills and Abilities:
- Proven leadership skills with highly developed interpersonal and communication abilities
- Strong strategic thinking and commitment to client-focused services and teamwork
- Established record of evidence-informed practice
- Capability to integrate administrative, professional, and operational aspects of public health programs efficiently
- Ability to foster an environment where continuous quality improvement principles are embraced

Medical Health Officers at Island Health can reside anywhere in the region, including the urban centers of Victoria or Nanaimo, or in one of the many smaller communities. Hybrid work arrangements are available.
