BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Work typically involves management and control of invasive species, habitat restoration and maintenance work, assisting with trail system maintenance and improvements, and assisting with the implementation of a comprehensive volunteer program. Work also includes development and implementation of environmental education programming and community outreach in coordination with the MPEA Natural Resources Managers. Participates in all aspects of natural resources management related to the MPEA. This position also performs maintenance of grounds and equipment and ensures that safety standards are met. Work weeks will follow a flexible, weekday schedule totaling 40 hours per week with occasional weekend and evening work required. Please note that this is a contingent (non-permanent, no benefits) position that is grant-funded.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
DUTIES: Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Assists the MPEA Natural Resources Specialist with the coordination and support of projects for volunteers, interns, students, and scout groups, etc.Leads diverse groups of volunteers in field activities including, but not limited to, Trail Maintenance Team, MPEA Weed Warriors, Master Naturalist projects, scout group and individual Eagle Scout activities and flora and fauna monitoring programs.Assists with Conservation Stewardship Projects including, invasive species removal, native tree and shrub plantings, seed collection, meadow management, and trail construction.Assists with volunteer training programs, recognition events, and administrative support.Performs trail system inspections, maintenance, and repairs. May assist with trail construction and/or implementation of trail drainage repair projects.Assists with invasive species control efforts utilizing techniques including, but not limited to, spraying, cutting, pulling, and mowing targeted invasive plant speciesDetermines and applies appropriate vegetation control methods, i.e. chemical, mechanical, biological, etc.Assists with monitoring protocols for measuring the effectiveness of invasive species control efforts.Assists the MPEA Natural Resource Managers with all aspects of early successional habitat restoration and maintenance including working with a variety of partners, conservation/civic groups, contractors, funders and regulatory authorities to accomplish habitat goals.Collects biological data on the flora, fauna and abiotic components of the MPEA which may include vegetation surveys, invertebrate surveys, herpetological surveys, bird surveys, soil sampling, or stream sampling.Performs and/or oversees various landscape maintenance activities such as mowing, weeding, pruning, planting, snow removal, etc.Organize, inventory, and maintain tools, supplies, equipment, and vehicles.Develops and implements MPEA StoryWalk programs in coordination with Howard County Library System partners.Works with the MPEA NRM to provide programming support for the third-grade curriculum Monarchs in Schools Program.Helps facilitate teacher workshops to encourage outdoor experiential learning.Provides support for Master Naturalist and Master Gardener volunteer projects and for educational components of MPEA group volunteer events.Develops community outreach materials with a conservation and stewardship message through kiosk displays, educational videos, website content, social media, and other creative outlets.Assists the MPEA Natural Resource Managers with other duties as assigned.Responsible for identifying and applying good sustainability practices into all aspects of Department operations.
